Jae never went to Ms. Menides's office unless she was in trouble. The last time Jae really got herself into trouble was when she broke Andrei's wrist. Jae had reasons for her violence and it never came unprovoked. Andrei had ignored her warning about mishandling Davian, and she responded, fulfilling the promise she made to him. Before that she'd been in the dungeons because Leon's curiosity brought him out on a full moon. Otherwise, Jae was a good student. She was the vice president of the student council, she participated and performed well in all of her classes, and she kept herself out of trouble. Now she was standing before the door and it opened to reveal Mr. Cavanaugh, Dr. Hallowfen, and two men who were obviously the police officers she heard the students chattering about. "Jae, come in," Dr. Hallowfen beckoned and Jae obeyed. She came and took a seat, as invited, and there was a stretch of uncomfortable silence that allowed Jae to start working through why she was there. It didn't take her long to figure it out. Actually, she had deduced it on the way there, and now she was trying to figure out how she was going to respond. Technically, she was considered a minor by appearance, but her true age was much older. Ratio-wise she was a minor, but technically she was an adult. She took in a deep breath. Only one of the officers was human. The other smelled like something else. Not animal. "Jae," Dr. Hallowfen's voice cut Jae from her thoughts using process of elimination, and to the matters at hand. What followed took an already uncomfortable silence and made it awkward. Questions came up that immediately made Jae feel defensive. She knew the police were just doing their job, but she was naturally a rather private person. She wasn't the sort that threw her life on social media or enjoyed giving out details about what she was doing and other . . . "Jae, is this yours?" the question finally came. A small plastic bag with the word" EVIDENCE" on it sat on the desk. In it was a small fox-shaped pendant. Immediately and involuntarily, Jae reached for her neck. She didn't wear the pendant too often, but it'd been a gift from her mother for Christmas before last. The action answered the question. Dr. Hallowfen's jaw visibly stiffened as Jae whispered, "Yes." She immediately looked at Jack, who shared the same expression on her face. "Do you know where you lost it?" one of the officers, Daniels, asked. Jae let a few beats pass before she shook her head. "Jae, where were you on the night of the 30th?" Dr. Hallowfen asked. " . . . I don't remember." |
