Who: Ellie and John
What: Random encounter
When: Tuesday
Where: School hallway
Rating: TBD

Ellie was in a foul mood. She was no fit company for anyone, and she knew it. This whole Valentines Day business had kicked off her temper, then Bayani had fanned the flames. This time last year Sorin and the rest of them were busy making plans to escape Anton Castle. Romance, love and Valentines Day hadn’t even been a thought. Recalling that was enough to cement her ire, but realizing that no one she was even half interested in was interested back completed this whole mess.

She’d been a bit rough with the flat iron as she got ready with Sara this morning. Her normally wild hair was straighter than she’d intended, and was staying that way longer. She’d been getting makeup tips from her friend as well, but today it was all a bit darker than normal for the heavy hand Ellie had put to it. She caught a look at herself in the little mirror she carried in her purse and let out with a sigh at herself.

“Mr. Farrowe was right,” she muttered at her reflection. “I’m lettin’ them get ta me.” Her nose wrinkled in self disgust. Her fellow students that hurried through the school hall were ignored from where she leaned against the wall. A fingertip tried to thin out the eyeliner she’d applied a little too thickly, but it was no use. Ellie huffed as she snapped the mirror shut. “Boys suck!” The mirror slipped from her fingers and fell toward what most certainly would be a lethal impact with the floor.

The exclamation drew John's attention easily enough as he was walking through the busy hallways. He looked at Ellie just in time to see the mirror fall and by some grace, certainly not natural athletic skill, John managed to snag it before it hit the ground.

Surprised and pleased by his smooth success, John looked at Ellie again and smiled brightly. "Here you go." He presented the mirror back to her. "Boys suck, huh?"

Ellie had startled when someone was suddenly catching her mirror, but she was grateful. Being caught in her exclamation made the smile that formed on her face a bit abashed, however.

"One wha' save me from seven years bad luck excepted," she said as she took the mirror from John. "Thanks fer tha'."

"No problem." John handed it over and then adjusted the strap of his bag that carried his books. "How've you been? Sorry I haven't kept in touch. I'm actually pretty bad about that with everyone, it seems."

John and Ellie had met a few times, actually. Once she had obliged in showing him her fire, then at the witch's circle Barclay had called, and then again at the pauwau after Barclay was in a coma. They had a few classes together, besides that. John didn't usually get involved in drama on the network.

"Tis all righ'," she said as she tucked the mirror back into her bag. "Ya havena missed much with me. Jest stupid Ellie MacNab drama." Ellie sighed, put on a brave smile for John but it didn't go anywhere near her hazel eyes.

"What about you?" When cornered, deflect. Despite her sweet demeanor, Ellie was really good at diverting the conversation from herself when she wanted. "Barclay's awake." And just as friendly as ever. "Will there be more circles?"

John glanced up. She said it like it was some kind of a trademark: Ellie McNab Drama™. He had never heard any drama about her, and assumed it was a personal thing she was dealing with. Maybe she was even reaching out in a way, wanting him to ask about it. John chewed the inside of his lip a moment, unsure if he should pry. Unsure if he really wanted to. He was not the kind of person to do that kind of thing.

Thankfully, she deflected, but it wasn't in a direction he wanted it to go in. "Me?" John shrugged. "Normal, I guess. As for circles, sure. Probably." He would assume there would be. There didn't need to be a crisis for there to be a witch circle or a pauwau. "Actually, I don't know." John shrugged again and smiled. "But I don't see why not. Are you practicing your elemental magic?"

No, she didn't want to talk about her drama. There were only a few people she was comfortable talking to about personal stuff so if John didn't know about any of it, she wouldn't pester him with it. For as open as her emotions were, there was a lot that Ellie kept inside.

"Aye," she said proudly. In this she didn't hide anything. As with all her other studies, or perhaps more so, she gave full effort to learning how to control her magic. "As best an' as often as I can. Tis too dangerous fer me ta no' have control."

John smiled to see the pride Ellie had in her powers. At least she wasn't afraid of what she could do. Or she hid it better. "That's responsible of you." He started to say more, but closed his mouth. He didn't need to point out that she had a good reason to need to be responsible after she'd burned her friend. John knew how heavy that kind of responsibility could get.

On a ledge of a row of lockers, the crow came to perch. John didn't know if Ellie could see it, the Spirit Animal was not always visible to others, but he knew what it was going to say before it said it.

Murder. Murder. Murder.

John looked down at the floor briefly and shifted his feet, clearing his throat. "Anyway, I, uh, I'm going to be late for class."

Her smile became a little tight around the edges. Responsible. Yes. She was responsible or she'd hurt someone again. Bad enough Sorin would always bear the scars she gave him, and they were the least of what she'd done. Ellie would always hold those scars in her memory as what would happen if she didn't keep herself responsible.

No, Ellie didn't see the crow, nor hear it. Her magic was limited to her fire unless she was working in a circle like when the school had been attacked. So John's sudden behavior was a little confusing. Ellie peered up at him curiously. "Oh. All right."
