Who: Paxton and Hugh
What: Detention, Day 1
When: Monday after classes
Where: Philosophy classroom
Rating: TBD
Hugh very rarely gave detention. He preferred to allow students to explore disagreements, defend their position. To his experience there was usually a reason for undesirable behavior. One just had to encourage the student to talk. Even if they didn’t talk about what prompted the misconduct, getting them to open up would usually lead them to solve the issue themselves. Eventually.
Other students it was simply in their nature to test the boundaries. This was a truth that Hugh had forgotten with one Paxton Rivera. Demons tested. They pushed. Hugh knew this, but Paxton had caught him off guard with his arrogance and defiance. The raven knew better than to fall into that, and yet it had happened. Elle’s advice for temperance had come a little late, but she had calmed him down. Cavanaugh, on the other hand…
The last bell had rung and Hugh lingered in his Philosophy classroom, waiting for Mr. Rivera’s arrival. Jack hadn’t been entirely off the mark, Hugh had to admit to himself. He’d already planned to talk with Paxton, but he needed to remember the patience he’d had when speaking with Ambriel. The angel had made it easy for him, however. Paxton would push him. Sometimes, Hugh had learned, teachers needed to be pushed as much as the students did.
Our patience will achieve more than our force. Hugh’s brow came down as he read that line. Edmund Burke. An Irish philosopher. “What did they put in the whisky back then?”
