Hugh had been giving Leif a hard time. It had been quite a while since he’d seen a real northman. The last had been long before he’d been stationed at St. Margaret’s. When he’d learned that not only was a northman going to be teaching, but a wyrm at that, well! Hugh had been filled with an excitement he hadn’t felt in recent memory. His brother would have been happy to supply him with the exact date, but Hugh hadn’t seen Munnin since his last visit to Asgard. That time was soon approaching. Jultide. Odin never failed to summon him during the Long Night. Hugh looked forward to telling him about Mr. Ragnarsson.
But first, Hugh had to explain a few things to the dragon. He owed him that much after twitching him for days. Hugh had always planned on telling Leif who and what he was, but the temptation for some fun couldn’t have been resisted. The time had come, however. Hugh had shown his hand, and now they would speak. The timing was right, Hugh thought. The faculty members were planning to enjoy some fine drink and company tonight. This conversation could open doors to what he hoped would be friendship.
They had agreed to meet in the courtyard, out in the winter air. Wherever this storm had come from, it reminded Hugh of old days in the north with lights dancing silently, eerily in the night sky. Hugh stood on the flagstones with his hands in his pants pockets and his eyes lifted as if recalling those nights so long ago. A wind caught at his long coat, billowing it back in mimicry of the wings he had in his natural form, but Hugh didn’t seem to feel the chill. His mind turned to what he was going to say to Leif. Nothing sounded quite right. He sighed. Maybe he’d just…wing it.
