Thread: Living Dead Halloween
WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: Halloween night, October 31st
WHERE: School grounds, the graveyard, the woods, the dorms

Barclay observed the clouds. It had been a cold, crisp day, perfectly suited for autumn and hallowe’en. Tomorrow, it would rain, he knew: the trees had whispered it to him, far more attuned to the weather patterns than he was. Tonight, it would remain dry.

A wind whipped up, sending a chill across the graveyard. Some people burrowed deeper into their coats. None of them were teachers, who were standing vigil. Solemn. It was about time. The sun was almost gun. Barclay looked around, teachers and Experts surrounding him. Most students avoided the graveyard, too busy doing prepwork for Halloween, but among Experts, it was tradition to be there when the dead rose from their graves. A last adieu, if you will.

Barclay could feel Ashton’s presence behind him, knowing how the dragon would look: serious and curious. Leon was a few steps away. Barclay wondered if it was weird for him, seeing how he had attended this last year, together with Mickey. Tonight, he was here, attending it with his sire, who stood behind the fangling, looking grim. Like a thug, but grim. And then there were the teachers: Ms. Stheno with her snakes curled up, Mr. Pheres with his arms crossed, Mr. Farrowe, Mr. Kaden, Ms. Hallowfen… Barclay would miss them, he realized. His eyes found Ms. Menides who was looking… almost sad. He had never seen her look sad. Stern, disappointed, kind, yes. Sad? No.

It was disconcerting.

They rose like smoke from the graves, strands of thin ethereal white that slowly shaped themselves into human-like shapes of silvery grey and translucent blue. A teacher with a fiddle started playing La Danse Macabre and, simultaneously, a low voice joined in. It sounded like a dirge. Barclay didn’t just hear the music: he could feel it, shivering down his spine, making goosebumps on his skin. The spirits assembled around Mr. Cavanaugh, the singer, waiting for him to finish. Like the living, they were paying their respects.

Barclay watched them, these ghosts, these memories of tales that ended unhappily. A pale, thin man with a commanding presence - Barclay thought he recognized him from one of the paintings in the hallways. A sad-looking maid with an apron and a bonnet, her wrists cut open and a silvery light pouring out. A Native American man covered in tattoos and scars, who reminded Barclay of how Leon used to be. That poor teacher who hadn’t survived an encounter with the Wendigo. And Jonah.

When Mr. Cavanaugh noticed him, his voice halted for a moment.

Ms. Menides walked towards her deceased student as the song ended and the ghosts started making their way towards the school, following path of the warm yellow lights that would lead them to the dorms and the school buildings. Barclay knew most of them would go to the Pegasus house, where the living and the dead gathered and communed. The living shared a meal while the dead could share their experiences.

Like always, the spirits would avoid House Hydra, which had made a proper haunted house. The theme this year was Haunted Hospital, adopting a proper bent way to their house of horrors. Crazy nurses, insane doctors, and ghosts haunting the hospital corridors… This year, they were going for traditional horror, fewer magic tricks to scare everyone. You didn’t need tricks when you had doctors with bloodied aprons and zombie nurses with sharp scissors. House Kitsune had been turned into a paradise for AV geeks, with their movies and video games. This year, their house had been themed towards dance games, mixing it up. House Sphinx would be all about the board games, though rumor had it that they’d rigged their basement as a laser gaming hall. There'd be poker tables as well, though the students had to bet with M&M's, not money.

And then you had House Ladon, which is where most everyone alive ended up to see the sun rise. It was where they built the bonfire and where the music was the loudest and the most danceable. Usually, students were the music-makers, the most promising disk jockeys getting about an hour to get everyone dancing. No matter how vigilant the teachers were, there was always some way to get alcohol. Even Mr. Kaden’s presence couldn’t avoid that, though he tried. It might have something to do with the fact that every year, all the teachers gathered here during the crucial hour before the festivities started. Ladons weren't known for their intelligence, but when it came to creatively breaking the rules, they were a match for most Hydras.

Barclay watched most people - both living and dead - leave, except for Ms. Menides and Jonah. A few teachers lingered there as well, watching. The teacher and her former stood there, looking at each other. Nothing was said, but it seemed something was happening. Barclay could feel the prickle of it. And finally, after a few quiet, tense moments, both Jonah and Ms. Menides chanced a small smile.

That was the signal. The last remaining people in the graveyard left for the school. Barclay took Ashton’s hand and they went back to their House. It was time to get to work.

"Unkillable is a matter of perspective. I mean, if you burn a zombie, or blow it into itty bitty pieces, it's kind of done. And there's this bit of weird lore that if you feed a zombie salt, if it tastes it, it knows it's supposed to be dead and returns to it's grave." Paxton shrugged. "The world is world."

Paxton nodded in agreement, forgetting to shuffle with the regular zombie-gait. He smirked at Thierry. "So, that's what you wanna do? Ogle the pretty girls? You got anyone particular in mind?"

"Well, maybe enjoy 'de view before I go engage 'dem," Thierry replied, "And no one in particular, no. Plenty nice to see but a lot of 'dem only want to be seen, non?" They enjoyed the flirtations for the most part and while some may have acted hopeful for more, they learned pretty quickly that Thierry was all about harmless flirting and maybe a little more, but nothing serious. He had yet to meet someone he really wanted to be serious about.

He then asked, "You tell me not lookin' at some one in particular, ami? Don't matta if it boy or girl, but just 'cause I don' have someone in particular I want, don't mean you don', d'accord?"

Jokingly, he nudged Paxton with his arm and then wriggled his eyebrows at the demon.

Ordinarily, Paxton would have bantered back, would have given Thierry a good riposte about his lack of a love life. This time, however, Paxton pursed his lips. Even under all that make-up, he looked quite serious. Because there was someone. And he was...interesting, in that bash-his-head-in sort of way.

"There might be someone," Paxton admitted. He held the door open for Thierry, the cold night air coming in. "It's... new. Weird. Why don't you have one? You're pretty popular, right?"

Thierry expected that comeback. Some clever quip coming from the envy demon but that beat longer that Paxton was thinking was enough for Thierry to look in Paxton's direction. "Might be?" he asked as a grin started tugging at the edge of his mouth, "New and weird. Ho, ho, mon ami. It sound like you got some'ting going 'dere. No, no, 'dis ain't about me. You just startin', homme."

He nudged him a bit more, "So. Tell me. What make it weird for you? What make it a 'might' instead of just bein' someone?" His eyebrows wriggled jokingly at Paxton, egging him on to tell him more.

Paxton gave Thierry an askance look. "Okay. Demons aren't very good at the whole confiding thing. At least, not my kind. Because secrets have power, and demons tend to like having it, as opposed to sharing it. So. Um. Yeah. Talking about this? Not... easy."

Paxton wrung his hands, before giving Thierry a direct look. "And, um, the other person is... secretive. So." The demon raised an eyebrow. "You can't tell anyone anything about me. Him. This. You got that?"

"Ah, I see, homme," Thierry said, "Gotta remember 'dat 'tings don't always run 'de same for everyone." It was something he learned in classes and the more he interacted with people. It was interesting that secrets held significance in any culture. They were personal and for Paxton, it meant trusting someone with it could provide a weakness. He actually didn't expect Paxton to make him promise not to tell.

Thierry reached a hand up and crossed over the left side of his upper chest, "Cross my heart, ami. Not a word to another soul." It wasn't like Thierry was really one to go spilling secrets. Even if he helped Claire with her biannual instinctual needs and there were a few girls he'd taken to kissing, it wasn't something to advertise. Secrets were secrets, though it could lead to people getting hurt.

"But don't feel like you gotta share wit' me if you unsure," Thierry added.

Words. With demons, that's what it came down to often. Not a word to another soul? In this school, that really didn't mean much. Not that he didn't trust Thierry - he did, almost somewhat implicitly - but it was a trick that was hard to a shake. "Not a word to anyone," Paxton specified, "whether they have a soul or not."

Paxton was perhaps better off not telling Thierry. Plausible deniability. So, instead he said: "I can't tell you because we're a really bad fit. He's vampire. He's in Pegasus. And really, his famous family knows nothing of his proclivities. So again, I can't tell you because of any of those reasons, now can I? So, I am unsure, and we best not mention his name ever again."

"Not to anyone," Thierry assured, "and 'dat a good point." Though if he was going to sign himself to the beliefs of the angel, every person in this school had a soul. But given the doubt that others had, it was probably safer to say that even without a soul, nobody would hear of it. So he waited, half-expecting that Paxton would just decide not to tell him.

As Paxton shared the description, there was really only one vampire that came to mind. The one that offered to get Thierry a professional tutor to help him with his English. The one who . . . "Don't he have a paramour, ami? This sorta one-sided for you then?" Because he wasn't going to say the name aloud, but if it was who he was thinking it was, well, he definitely had a girlfriend.

Victoria! Crap. Paxton kept forgetting about the beard. Thierry was the kind of guy who would have a problem with doing these kind of things, too. Adultery. Right, because monogamy wasn't limiting. He then realized that Victoria was his out of this sticky situation. "Right," Paxton said, "entirely one-sided. It's sort unrequited. It's..." Paxton clicked his tongue. "Quite annoying."

Paxton shook his head, giving Thierry a rueful little smile. "So, how do you deal with this... affliction of the heart? Is it supposed to trip you up?"

"'dat too bad, homme," Thierry shook his head, "no'ting quite as inconvenient as when 'de person you want to be wit' is wit' someone else. As 'dey say, c'est la view." Because there wasn't much that Paxton could do so long as James was in a relationship. Well, there was plenty he could do, and Thierry would say he was a little surprised that Paxton hadn't done something yet. He knew boundaries didn't really exist for everyone, especially if someone else had what they wanted.

With the followup questions, Thierry let out a low whistle, "Hard to say. You let yourself hold onto 'dat person, hopin' 'dey get free, or you start lookin' at someone else. Likin' someone don't really come at 'de best time tho'. You feelin' tripped up?"

"I feel like an idiot, most of the time," Paxton said. "You know, I want to be with him, want him to talk to me, smile at me, the whole nine yards. And I keep finding excuses for him, you know? Because I know liking him is a bad, bad idea, and yet, I keep coming back to him."

It was James' mouth, Paxton decided. It did things. Bad, bad things.

"Look, have you ever been in love? Or... I don't know, something like it? Is it... Is it really the end-all, be-all, or is Davian just exaggerating?"

Thierry had seen this before and while he never really had firsthand experience with it, he'd seen it happen. A drug that people just can't quit. Eventually it either worked out or it tore the one desiring down. The question posed by Paxton brought a small smile from Thierry's face, "I 'tink sometimes it just one person, or maybe it just one person at 'dat one time. 'dat person you want real bad for a time and maybe right 'den, you need'em, but 'den after a while, not really."

The way that Paxton talked didn't really sound so much like love as much as infatuation. Where you kinda ignored all the bad things about a situation because your brain could only focus on having them. It was just too bad for Pax that the object of his affection belonged to someone else.

"But I sure 'dere one person out there for somebody. Or maybe more 'den one person," he said, "what I do know is findin' 'dat person so young is real rare. So only time will tell if 'dis 'de real 'ting for you or it just what you feel for right now."

Paxton nodded, giving Thierry an askance look. He wondered who someone who looked - and, quite honestly, talked - like white trash could be so kind or wise. Paxton thought that Thierry was one of the few students who would never get wrapped up in drama. "Fine. I'll see how it plays out. Won't go around doing anything stupid."

He'd only gone and done James, who really was a lot of things but stupid? No.

Was this real? No. Probably not. Was this real enough for now? Yes.

He nudged Thierry. "Such a good listener, Thierry," Paxton said. "So, you sure you ain't - haven't got someone in particular?"

"I sure hope you don't," Thierry laughed, "Else you be bangin' you head against a wall like 'de rest of us fools." He was only joking though and honestly, Thierry only had a few relationships in his life. They were the ones he felt like chasing. The ones he wanted to chase. But otherwise it was more about enjoying the fact that he was young and currently wasn't expected to attach himself to anyone.

He flashed a grin at Paxton's nudge and then chuckled, "Yeah, I sure. Not 'dat 'dere ain't some nice scenery here—" he paused to admire a couple of girls dressed in outfits that certainly were meant to draw the eyes of those around them for how well they fit those figures, "—but I wouldn't say 'dere just one right now. Gotta be some'ting different about whoever 'dat someone be." He shrugged because he wasn't desperate to find that person. He was patient.

"Too bad," Paxton said, "for all the ladies out there tonight, because they won't be safe from you. Hide your daughters, hide your wives, cause Terry's coming out tonight! I'll be your wingman." Paxton gave Thierry a definitive nod. "Let's go."
