Thread: Living Dead Halloween
WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: Halloween night, October 31st
WHERE: School grounds, the graveyard, the woods, the dorms

Barclay observed the clouds. It had been a cold, crisp day, perfectly suited for autumn and hallowe’en. Tomorrow, it would rain, he knew: the trees had whispered it to him, far more attuned to the weather patterns than he was. Tonight, it would remain dry.

A wind whipped up, sending a chill across the graveyard. Some people burrowed deeper into their coats. None of them were teachers, who were standing vigil. Solemn. It was about time. The sun was almost gun. Barclay looked around, teachers and Experts surrounding him. Most students avoided the graveyard, too busy doing prepwork for Halloween, but among Experts, it was tradition to be there when the dead rose from their graves. A last adieu, if you will.

Barclay could feel Ashton’s presence behind him, knowing how the dragon would look: serious and curious. Leon was a few steps away. Barclay wondered if it was weird for him, seeing how he had attended this last year, together with Mickey. Tonight, he was here, attending it with his sire, who stood behind the fangling, looking grim. Like a thug, but grim. And then there were the teachers: Ms. Stheno with her snakes curled up, Mr. Pheres with his arms crossed, Mr. Farrowe, Mr. Kaden, Ms. Hallowfen… Barclay would miss them, he realized. His eyes found Ms. Menides who was looking… almost sad. He had never seen her look sad. Stern, disappointed, kind, yes. Sad? No.

It was disconcerting.

They rose like smoke from the graves, strands of thin ethereal white that slowly shaped themselves into human-like shapes of silvery grey and translucent blue. A teacher with a fiddle started playing La Danse Macabre and, simultaneously, a low voice joined in. It sounded like a dirge. Barclay didn’t just hear the music: he could feel it, shivering down his spine, making goosebumps on his skin. The spirits assembled around Mr. Cavanaugh, the singer, waiting for him to finish. Like the living, they were paying their respects.

Barclay watched them, these ghosts, these memories of tales that ended unhappily. A pale, thin man with a commanding presence - Barclay thought he recognized him from one of the paintings in the hallways. A sad-looking maid with an apron and a bonnet, her wrists cut open and a silvery light pouring out. A Native American man covered in tattoos and scars, who reminded Barclay of how Leon used to be. That poor teacher who hadn’t survived an encounter with the Wendigo. And Jonah.

When Mr. Cavanaugh noticed him, his voice halted for a moment.

Ms. Menides walked towards her deceased student as the song ended and the ghosts started making their way towards the school, following path of the warm yellow lights that would lead them to the dorms and the school buildings. Barclay knew most of them would go to the Pegasus house, where the living and the dead gathered and communed. The living shared a meal while the dead could share their experiences.

Like always, the spirits would avoid House Hydra, which had made a proper haunted house. The theme this year was Haunted Hospital, adopting a proper bent way to their house of horrors. Crazy nurses, insane doctors, and ghosts haunting the hospital corridors… This year, they were going for traditional horror, fewer magic tricks to scare everyone. You didn’t need tricks when you had doctors with bloodied aprons and zombie nurses with sharp scissors. House Kitsune had been turned into a paradise for AV geeks, with their movies and video games. This year, their house had been themed towards dance games, mixing it up. House Sphinx would be all about the board games, though rumor had it that they’d rigged their basement as a laser gaming hall. There'd be poker tables as well, though the students had to bet with M&M's, not money.

And then you had House Ladon, which is where most everyone alive ended up to see the sun rise. It was where they built the bonfire and where the music was the loudest and the most danceable. Usually, students were the music-makers, the most promising disk jockeys getting about an hour to get everyone dancing. No matter how vigilant the teachers were, there was always some way to get alcohol. Even Mr. Kaden’s presence couldn’t avoid that, though he tried. It might have something to do with the fact that every year, all the teachers gathered here during the crucial hour before the festivities started. Ladons weren't known for their intelligence, but when it came to creatively breaking the rules, they were a match for most Hydras.

Barclay watched most people - both living and dead - leave, except for Ms. Menides and Jonah. A few teachers lingered there as well, watching. The teacher and her former stood there, looking at each other. Nothing was said, but it seemed something was happening. Barclay could feel the prickle of it. And finally, after a few quiet, tense moments, both Jonah and Ms. Menides chanced a small smile.

That was the signal. The last remaining people in the graveyard left for the school. Barclay took Ashton’s hand and they went back to their House. It was time to get to work.

The Courtyard: Alex, Ashton, Barclay & OPEN

Ashton's cold fury was focused on Alex and he was keenly aware of the fact that they were in the courtyard, surrounded by others including staff lurking somewhere, and that he would get into serious trouble if he acted on his initial reaction that involved hurling Alex into the castle wall. He stood there, trembling with outrage as Alex proceeded to mock him by imitating him.

It was almost enough to trigger him into action when Alex, in that ridiculous voice, said that he needed his witch to solve all his problems. "You fool," he began with a snarl, taking a step forward to make Alex regret the words. He was stopped by Barclay's voice coming up behind him and Ashton turned his head slightly to look back. Alex was lucky Barclay had arrived. The presence of the witch had checked the dragon's movement with intent and Ashton stood taller, waiting for Alex to give him one more reason, one more push to lash out at him.

Alex laughed. He ignored the ice and sharpness in Barclay's words because that boy was an idiot. Alex knew if he wanted to actually kill Ashton, he could've made sure that it happened. What happened was an accident and the fact that Barclay still thought Alex's intent was to kill the dragon at all show how much of an idiot he actually was. Both of them were. Ashton for stomping around like a big cry baby and Barclay for failing to see that Ashton was an asshole with a god-complex. And in less than a year, he and his little friend would be gone.

Good riddance. But that didn't mean Alex wasn't going to make it clear that people weren't actually going to miss them and that not everyone was grovelling at their feet. Especially when they spoke like Barclay did. Every word out of his mouth completely false but too deluded to realize otherwise.

"Oh, Christ," Alex laughed, "You guys are both so . . . ridiculous. I can see why Mothra here—" he nodded toward Ashton "—uses the word so much. It fits the pair of you so well. I make fun of everyone and they make fun right back. If you can't laugh, then that's your problem, not mine. I'm just here to have fun and so far, I kinda am." A shrug of the shoulders.

He wasn't going to let them make him lose his cool. Barclay had done that once to Alex and while Barclay made Alex nervous still, there were scarier things out there than some witch. The top of that list was Ms. Menides and compared to her, Barclay was a teacup Yorkie.

Barclay could almost feel it radiating off of Ashton, that palpable anger. It wouldn't take much for him to transform, to actually smash Alex into the wall or to tear him into ribbons. And the truth was, Barclay kind of wanted him to rip apart this little sociopath. Let's see if Alex thought they were so ridiculous then.

But Ashton could not afford that. Ashton could not attack a human, because it would cost him his humanity. So, Barclay did what he could to defuse the situation. Which meant going for Alex before Ashton could.

"You know what would be fun for me?" The distance between them was small, and Barclay easily closed it, his fist going for Alex's nose. He knew how to fight, always having been a scrapper before he'd mastered his magic.

Barclay gave Alex a cold look. "Go on, then. Make fun of me. Or go run to the teacher. That's what your good at, isn't it? Sneaking around. Snitching. Go on then, Alex. Show me what you got."

The transition into physical violence drew exclamations from those other students in the courtyard and they gathered closer to witness what was about to go down. Schoolyard fights weren't uncommon place in the Academy. Different people from different places in the world and different stages of life and levels of control tended to not always get along. Especially when they were all adolescents.

But Ashton had never seen his witch fight anyone besides Barclay's brothers. The brothers who gave him a hard time in a way that caused Ashton to bristle in defense of his witch until he realized this was a familial thing, done out of affection, strangely enough. And he'd realized that Barclay could hold his own perfectly well, much to Ashton's satisfaction.

Barclay's action broke the tension in the dragon and he blinked in surprise. It had come not a second too soon, as Ashton had already been releasing his form to become the powerful dragon - not the ridiculous costume - to retaliate and act on his anger. Barclay was accosting Alex, daring him to fight back after the first blow landed. Ashton growled in accord, backing Barclay up. If Alex didn't just run like the coward he was, Ashton would crush him if he tried to land a blow on Barclay in retaliation. It was the only excuse he'd need to engage. A small part of him said he should take Barclay and leave the situation, but the dragon wasn't quite mature enough to back out of a senseless confrontation.

The Courtyard: Alex, Ashton, Barclay, Davian & OPEN

Davian was making his way across the courtyard, shoulders straight in his impeccable Paxton suit, hair perfectly in place, and even his shoes polished. He was virtually unrecognizable in his costume. He heard the shouts on the other side of the courtyard and looked over with interest. Davian's beard was not quite as perfect as Paxton's was, but a little glamour magic helped with that, and he rubbed it as he saw the group of students gathering around something.

"Well well, this could be interesting," he said in his most composed and elegant voice. To his credit, Davian had not broken character all night and had only slipped a few times by using the word fuck a bit more frequently than Paxton might have, but he was proud of his acting skills.

Davian drew closer, his tail swishing behind him, but glamoured to be hidden from sight. Paxton didn't have a tail, after all. "What's going on?" he asked the closest student, not joining the press of bodies so it wouldn't ruin the suit. Besides, Paxton wouldn't jump into a throng of people.

"Barclay just punched Alex in the face!" The student informed him. "And the dragon is about to go all RAHHHH on his ass, too!"

Davian's eyes widened. Alex vs. the druid and the dragon. Again. "FUCK!" His friend's mouth had probably gotten him into trouble again and then Davian remembered the costume Alex was going as. Ashton had probably not been as impressed as Davian was, who'd been rolling on the floor in Alex's room when the shaman had shown him earlier.

Davian dropped the act and shoved his way into the crowd of students, worming through them like a demon could, shoving where he couldn't, and only got his tail stepped on once. He broke into the center of the circle and without hesitation, swooped in between Alex and the druid with the dragon at his back.

"Okay, boys! Fuck off!" He called out, grabbing Alex, costume and all, and dragging him back. "We're done here. Come on, Lex."

The punch came before Alex even knew it was coming. He expected this from Ashton, not from Barclay. It made him take a couple of steps back and it looked a little silly as he used the arms of the costume to try to keep his balance. But then Barclay was in his face and daring him to continue. The fucker just HIT him. Snitch? Oh fuck yeah was he going to snitch. Maybe he'd get another apology letter out of it too. He'd start a collection. And knowing that Barclay didn't mean it but had to write it would make it that much better.

Alex pulled off the top of the costume exposing his face. His hair stuck up from having it matted down by the fabric and his expression was clear. Only it wasn't rage or anger. It was satisfaction. Like he was happy that just happened and in a way he was.

He'd gotten under their skin and he didn't have to do much. It was a stupid smirk on his face but he hoped it would make them want to punch him again. Davian appeared before Alex could say anything and started to drag him away. Alex didn't really fight it and simply shouted, "I win."

Even if it didn't look like a victory, Alex saw it as one. Because in the end, Alex had gotten a rise out of them and made Barclay look like a humorless thug. The fact that Ashton didn't do anything also proved Alex's point in a way. Ashton couldn't do anything himself and had his witch do it for him.

"Everyone saw the punch, right?" Alex asked Davian.

Barclay did indeed want to slap that smug little smile off of Alex' face. Maybe make him lose a tooth. He had been way too damn nice that night in the forest. Frightening Alex hadn't been enough. He should've given him something to remember them by, something actually permanent...

But then Davian dragged Alex away, and Barclay knew better than to interfere. If this became an all-about brawl, Barclay and Ashton would win. Easily. And it would be frowned upon, breaking Alex's spine and picking a dragon's teeth with his ribs.

So Barclay let them go. He grinned, shouting after them: "You just got saved by Davian, of all people! Run away, little Alex, run!"

Barclay shook his head, raising an eyebrow at the crowd. He hoped for a perfect one-liner, but it never came. "Show's over, everybody. If you want to see a dragon in action, go visit the Haunted House."
