Thread: Living Dead Halloween
WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: Halloween night, October 31st
WHERE: School grounds, the graveyard, the woods, the dorms

Barclay observed the clouds. It had been a cold, crisp day, perfectly suited for autumn and hallowe’en. Tomorrow, it would rain, he knew: the trees had whispered it to him, far more attuned to the weather patterns than he was. Tonight, it would remain dry.

A wind whipped up, sending a chill across the graveyard. Some people burrowed deeper into their coats. None of them were teachers, who were standing vigil. Solemn. It was about time. The sun was almost gun. Barclay looked around, teachers and Experts surrounding him. Most students avoided the graveyard, too busy doing prepwork for Halloween, but among Experts, it was tradition to be there when the dead rose from their graves. A last adieu, if you will.

Barclay could feel Ashton’s presence behind him, knowing how the dragon would look: serious and curious. Leon was a few steps away. Barclay wondered if it was weird for him, seeing how he had attended this last year, together with Mickey. Tonight, he was here, attending it with his sire, who stood behind the fangling, looking grim. Like a thug, but grim. And then there were the teachers: Ms. Stheno with her snakes curled up, Mr. Pheres with his arms crossed, Mr. Farrowe, Mr. Kaden, Ms. Hallowfen… Barclay would miss them, he realized. His eyes found Ms. Menides who was looking… almost sad. He had never seen her look sad. Stern, disappointed, kind, yes. Sad? No.

It was disconcerting.

They rose like smoke from the graves, strands of thin ethereal white that slowly shaped themselves into human-like shapes of silvery grey and translucent blue. A teacher with a fiddle started playing La Danse Macabre and, simultaneously, a low voice joined in. It sounded like a dirge. Barclay didn’t just hear the music: he could feel it, shivering down his spine, making goosebumps on his skin. The spirits assembled around Mr. Cavanaugh, the singer, waiting for him to finish. Like the living, they were paying their respects.

Barclay watched them, these ghosts, these memories of tales that ended unhappily. A pale, thin man with a commanding presence - Barclay thought he recognized him from one of the paintings in the hallways. A sad-looking maid with an apron and a bonnet, her wrists cut open and a silvery light pouring out. A Native American man covered in tattoos and scars, who reminded Barclay of how Leon used to be. That poor teacher who hadn’t survived an encounter with the Wendigo. And Jonah.

When Mr. Cavanaugh noticed him, his voice halted for a moment.

Ms. Menides walked towards her deceased student as the song ended and the ghosts started making their way towards the school, following path of the warm yellow lights that would lead them to the dorms and the school buildings. Barclay knew most of them would go to the Pegasus house, where the living and the dead gathered and communed. The living shared a meal while the dead could share their experiences.

Like always, the spirits would avoid House Hydra, which had made a proper haunted house. The theme this year was Haunted Hospital, adopting a proper bent way to their house of horrors. Crazy nurses, insane doctors, and ghosts haunting the hospital corridors… This year, they were going for traditional horror, fewer magic tricks to scare everyone. You didn’t need tricks when you had doctors with bloodied aprons and zombie nurses with sharp scissors. House Kitsune had been turned into a paradise for AV geeks, with their movies and video games. This year, their house had been themed towards dance games, mixing it up. House Sphinx would be all about the board games, though rumor had it that they’d rigged their basement as a laser gaming hall. There'd be poker tables as well, though the students had to bet with M&M's, not money.

And then you had House Ladon, which is where most everyone alive ended up to see the sun rise. It was where they built the bonfire and where the music was the loudest and the most danceable. Usually, students were the music-makers, the most promising disk jockeys getting about an hour to get everyone dancing. No matter how vigilant the teachers were, there was always some way to get alcohol. Even Mr. Kaden’s presence couldn’t avoid that, though he tried. It might have something to do with the fact that every year, all the teachers gathered here during the crucial hour before the festivities started. Ladons weren't known for their intelligence, but when it came to creatively breaking the rules, they were a match for most Hydras.

Barclay watched most people - both living and dead - leave, except for Ms. Menides and Jonah. A few teachers lingered there as well, watching. The teacher and her former stood there, looking at each other. Nothing was said, but it seemed something was happening. Barclay could feel the prickle of it. And finally, after a few quiet, tense moments, both Jonah and Ms. Menides chanced a small smile.

That was the signal. The last remaining people in the graveyard left for the school. Barclay took Ashton’s hand and they went back to their House. It was time to get to work.

Haunted Hydra: Leon & John

John knew it was Halloween, but this was crazy. The whole dormitory was being put to use, turned into a giant haunted house and it was tricky to get around without ending up in a dark hallway with scaractors trying to get you. He managed it somehow, coming down to the main foyer to go out and see what else was going on, and then spotted the dark haired boy sitting off to the side on his phone.

John did a double take. It was Leon, wasn't it? The last time he'd seen his half-brother had been when the voodoo priest was covered in tattoos and adorned with dreadlocks. The necklaces he wore then were magic, John had been told, and for protection. The kinds of things Leon needed protection from back then would make anyone of a sound mind shudder with dread. That's what John had been told.

The dreads were gone, but John still recognized his brother. He was frozen to the spot, just staring at Leon. Shit, he wasn't ready for this. He didn't know what to say to someone who had saved the way of life their people still meagerly clung to. John thought of the package he had in his room, the one his mother had given him to deliver to Leon. John took a deep breath. He had to get this over with.

"Um, excuse me. Leon?" John stepped up. His palms were sweating with nerves and he felt his mouth go dry. "Can I talk to you?"

Leon glanced up from his phone when someone said his name. He looked at John, not recognizing him from any of the other Houses, and he realized it must be the new student. But something was off. The guy's heart was beating faster than normal. It wasn't all that strange, considering this was a haunted house on Halloween, so Leon didn't think much of it.

"Sure. You're the new Hydra?" He stood up and put his phone into a pocket. Leon looked more closely at him but didn't approach. It wasn't just his heart beat, something else was different about him. Leon looked more closely at him, thinking he looked vaguely familiar somehow. He inhaled, breathing in the boy's scent. "Sorry, do I know you from..."

Leon blinked, staring at John as the smell registered with his memories. "You're from the reservation. What are you called?" The last was asked in the Cherokee language that Leon didn't get much opportunity to use. His pronunciation was a little rusty.

"Geeze, that was... some quick deduction skills." John laughed nervously and swiped his hair behind his ear. Too late to back out now. Leon's attention was kind of intense. John glanced around the room, wishing he'd picked a better, more private place to meet his brother.

"I'm called John Tohquah." He paused and watched Leon, then glanced down. He almost didn't want to see the moment Leon put the rest of the pieces together. Then again, he'd been waiting a long time for this, so he looked up again and straightened up. Shoulders back, John swallowed. He looked squarely at Leon. "We're brothers."

Leon's gaze didn't waver as John made a nervous laugh and hand motion. He didn't try to explain that it wasn't deduction skills, but a scent memory that had drawn the correct conclusions. If this was someone from his tribe, then they may already know he'd been turned into a vampire and, if they'd paid attention to the elders, know that vampires had very keen senses.

And if this was someone from his tribe, who he hadn't heard from since before he was turned, then what was he doing here? Did the elders really have the audacity to send a student to St. Margaret's Academy after they'd disowned one of their own and left him in the Academy's care without any support? Ms. Menides surely wouldn't allow it. So what was this?

Then, there it was. The pieces fitting together. Tohquah. His mother's name. That was why this boy looked vaguely familiar. That was why he smelled like he was from the reservation. That was why the school had allowed him to come. Because he was Leon's brother.

What?

A brother. He had a brother. This boy was his brother. Leon's light eyes moved down John's frame, slow and deliberate. His jaw tightened and he became acutely aware of the other people in the foyer who were glancing their way. Word could spread of this quickly. Did he want it to? Did he want other people to know before he'd had time to fully absorb it?

A brother. And his mother had never whispered a word of it. Neither had the elders. Not even when he was preparing to kill again for them. Not even after he'd killed again and had gained the last and most powerful spirit to haunt his every step and permeate his dreams. Not even when he'd lost the fight to hold them back and had almost had his soul physically torn from his body, saved only by the vampire bite of his friend and protector. No word at all had come from the person who should matter most in his life to tell him that he wasn't alone.

Leon thought the days of his family hurting him had been at an end. Apparently they still had one card to play.

Leon's eyes narrowed and fixated on John's. Their eyes were a match in color, something Leon realized with a start. It stalled the growl that had started to form in his throat. A brother. "Brothers. I'm not... I never knew. How... why..." Leon shook his head and closed his eyes. "We can't talk about this here. Come." The command was given, but Leon didn't turn away from John to move towards the stairs. He wasn't quite willing to let him out of his sights yet. Instead, he indicated John should go first.

John had the uncomfortable sense of being weighed and measured by Leon when that gaze of his raked over his form. It was a tense moment that seemed to go on forever. Leon seemed to be absorbing the news pretty well, but the tightness in John's shoulders didn't go away. How fast were vampires again? Was he in danger of being attacked? Maybe he should've waited for that formal introduction with Dr. Hallowfen. Shit!

John was about to take a step backwards when Leon spoke again. That slight narrowing of his eyes had been practically predatory. The Cherokee words were halting when Leon spoke again and John could tell that he was trying to work through it. Of course the obvious solution of talking about it in a more private place made sense, but it also set John a little more on edge.

"Alright, Leon." He met and held Leon's eyes, wanting to show him, somehow, that he was going to trust him. Even if Leon didn't know what to think of this yet, John was going to be the one to offer trust first. That trust would come in the form of going off alone with a vampire. Leon wanted to keep their affairs private, and that was perfectly alright with John.

He walked towards the stairs, keeping his eyes on Leon until he was past him, and then started to move up. "Where are we going?"

"Just upstairs," Leon answered. Upstairs, somewhere away from the line of people waiting to get into the haunted house. Somewhere private where he could think.

Leon was grateful for the break, the length of time it took them to move from the foyer to the stairway. He was able to collect his thoughts and in came the doubts. This guy could just be lying. Even if they had the same eyes, it could just be a ruse. Leon didn't have any ideas on why the tribe would want to send someone just to punk him, but it was easier to accept that far out possibility than accept this as the truth.

Once they were out of sight, Leon glanced behind them to be sure the coast was clear before he caught John by the collar and pulled him back around, pushing him against the wall to pin him there.

"Be honest," he hissed, fist tight in John's shirt. "Why are you here? My mother never said anything about having a son. So who are you, really?"

John was almost to the top of the stairs when Leon grabbed him and turned him into the wall. "Shit, Leon!" John hissed back, wrapping his fingers around Leon's wrist where it gripped him. He could feel the skin under his fingers and it was cold. John probed deeper and realized he couldn't feel a pulse. It was the first time, as far as he knew, that he'd ever touched a vampire, and it felt so wrong to his senses.

"I'm being honest! We have the same mother. She never told you because..." John shut his mouth and swallowed, looking at Leon's intense glare. John sighed. "Because she cheated on my dad with your dad and you came from it. That's why you got sent away to Haiti. She was trying to hide it from him."

"That--" Leon's fist tightened and he practically lifted John up on his toes. Then the vampire blinked and his scowl lessened. "She was married?" It was all falling into place, the reason why his mother had never looked at him when he was born, why she had sent him away with the Houngan who everyone said never got along with her. She'd been married and was ashamed of what came from her encounter with the Voodoo Priest. She'd tried to hide her shame.

Leon relaxed his grip as more things started to make sense. The look on his mother's face when he ran from the spirits and found his way back to the tribe, begging for help. The secrecy she'd used around him when discussing with the elders, the speed with which she shoved him off to the Academy to get help there instead. All to hide her shame.

He'd known all his life that he was a bastard, illegitimate child of an unwed mother and father, but he hadn't known it was the reason his mother sent him away. And if she hadn't sent him away, he never would have learned Voodoo or discovered his ability to spirit walk into another person's body. He never would have killed. He never would have had the vengeful spirits on his heels most of his life and, Leon realized in the chain of events that ran through his mind, he never would have been turned into a vampire.

It was a hard blow to take in, and Leon released John and stepped back, raking his fingers into his hair and clenching them into fists. "Sweet Loa," he breathed, sinking down to sit on the steps.

John watched it register on Leon's face. Leon had saved a people who had rejected him, and because he'd saved them, his own life was ruined. Gone, if you asked John. Vampires weren't truly living. John swallowed and watched Leon sit down with his fists in his hair. It was a strange oath to come from his brother, but John didn't ask just then who the Loa were.

"Hey." John stepped closer, unsure. "It happened and now you know, right? Can't do anything to change it. I..." Shrugging slightly, John sat down beside Leon on the step. "I admire you for what you did. I always have. Even if my... our mother never wanted you, you were important to the tribe. You're the whole reason they're still able to practice the way they do and why I'm still free to come here to learn. I mean, you, Leon, you're a legend! People aren't going to forget what you did for the tribe. They wish they were as powerful as you. Er, as you used to be. Sorry."

Leon brought his hands down from his hair, rubbing his face as though he could just wash away all the negative feelings of being 'less than', like some mathematics equation that was solved with a definitive answer. He sniffed and shook his head, looking over at John. His brother really needed to work on his peptalk skills, but it made him smile.

"I knew she didn't love me," he said quietly. "That's not why I helped the tribe." Shaking his head again slowly, Leon braced his arms around his knees, leaning forward on the step. "If I could go back and choose again, I'd still do it. Because even if I'm not... whatever. I'm still tied to the tribe by blood." Leon's eyes lifted to John's again. "You don't leave your family to suffer. No matter what."

Reaching out, Leon touched John's face, fingertips resting on his cheek. He studied him, the shattered center of himself set to mend, slowly but surely, but one thing would remain now, no matter what news came from his family that would try and tear him apart. And that was the fact that he had a brother.

"What do you do? What kind of magic?"

John stared at Leon for a long moment before he blinked and opened his mouth, trying to find something to say. After all that, Leon would still do it? John didn't understand how Leon could talk about family like that after how they'd treated him. His mother has sent her infant son off with a stranger, even if it was his biological father. She'd lied to her son by now telling him she was married and had another son, which made John wonder what else she was hiding from both of them.

Still Leon would have done it for them?

John blinked again when Leon touched his face. Then slowly, John managed to smile. His brother wouldn't hate him for what their mother had done. He didn't even hate their mother. John's admiration for Leon grew even more.

"Oh, I'm a healer." John had waited a long time to say this to Leon, to show him what he could do that was powerful and useful and important. Like his older brother. "My Spirit Guide appeared to me and told me to touch my best friend, a long time ago, and when I did, I could feel like... this door opening inside me. The magic poured out and into my friend and he was healed." John's smile grew as he looked at Leon. "Since then I've been learning with the elders. I mean, until..."

John swallowed and looked down, becoming fascinated in his fingernails. "I mean, until I came here, obviously."

Leon blinked. The Spirit Guides came to all Medicine Men and Women when they were chosen. Leon was listening, but his mind was reeling. Why had his mother kept this from him? It was amazing that John, someone in their family at all, had been chosen by the Guides. It didn't happen often in a generation and here was a boy who was found worthy to have such knowledge and the gift to use it.

Leon listened as John talked about healing his friend and how he described the magic as it awakened within him. Leon's smile grew as well. He remembered that feeling when it happened to him the first time. Despite John's distraction and halt of hesitation in his story towards the end, Leon embraced him by gripping John by the shoulders and pulling him close.

"The spirits chose you, my own brother, to join the Medicine Men like our grandfather. That's amazing. What an honor. And why..." Leon pulled back, still gripping John by the shoulders, to look him in the eye. "Why did they send you here to learn? Why not stay and cultivate your craft with the expert practitioners?"

It was exactly the reaction John had hoped Leon would have. The brotherly embrace was a bit of a surprise, but John welcomed it and returned it. There were a lot of different emotions in the past thirty minutes since he'd met his brother in person and Leon had found he even had a brother to meet. There were bound to be an embrace or two, if everything went well.

"No, I... I mean." John tried to maintain eye contact with Leon when the inevitable questions arose. Why had he come here instead of staying with the tribe. "It's a long story." he laughed to hide his hesitancy to speak of it, of his addiction and the trouble it got him in. John didn't know Leon well enough, but he certainly didn't want his older half-brother getting into his business all too easily. John liked to have his boundaries, after all.

"I'll tell you later. I know you have to get back to the haunted house. I think I'm going to go out exploring."
