5. Hope goes Solo with angry World Cup rant
December 1, 2009
(the event happened in 2007, but Hope Solo's segement is part of 'The five biggest soccer stories of the last decade')
It is not often that soccer, or indeed women's sports, becomes big news in the United States. But Hope Solo's furious comments after being left out of the women's national team's 4-0 World Cup semifinal defeat to Brazil in 2007 became a hot topic across the nation.
Solo lashed out after being ditched from the starting lineup in favor of veteran Briana Scurry, who went on to give an unconvincing performance as the U.S. was dumped out of the tournament.
Solo insisted she would have prevented the goals that Scurry let in and accused head coach Greg Ryan of living in the past by selecting her goalkeeping rival.
Her actions led to her being sent home from China in disgrace and left out of three subsequent matches.
