Thomas did not share the same notion of decency. At least, not to the same degree. He watched her closely. The shy American woman appealed to him. But it was not the giggling helplessness that often derived from a lack of wit. He had witnessed it with enough ladies who had fallen for his charm. With Edith it was controlled and intelligent. It was innocence and yet it bared hidden strength. It was rather appealing indeed. She was a phenomenal woman.
