On another safety patrol route through the ocean's kingdom filled with homes, stores, museums, and art Cristiano noticed something strangely different. While the castle and its attached city had arrived, beautiful to behold, it had been empty and void of much. The only stores filled with scraps seemed to be food stores, which reminded Cris of their state after the attack on Meromara by the raiders. Overturned. Ransacked. Looted and empty. He had provided for himself and Juliet during her staying days by fishing and hunting for sea fruits.
Now, swimming through the streets, he thought it looked a bit cleaner. He had worked so hard to make it nice but he was but one merman with two hands. The carousel was righted, beautiful with carved seaglass giant angelfish shapes--how beautiful and ironic. A ring in the center of each fish allowed a rider to sit and they could be taken round and round on a delightful spin that also went up and down. He sat upon it for a moment and sighed, feeling as if this surely must be a good sign. Cris passed two loops before he swam away with a last look at the ride before resuming his patrol. In doing so he found the stores filled. Food! Fresh and delicious with sweets and meats and greens. He ate from a water's apple and filled a cloth bag with as much as his arms could carry and took it home. They would feast and Juliet would finally taste real, prepared, merman food.
Alas, his patrols were not over and so he returned. On his way he paused to look through the open windows which the sun shot through filling the store with light. A jewelry store. He made a note to return and did so after completing the rest of his route an hour later. Cristiano felt a bit guilty as he practically looted the store but who else was there to see it? No one. It was himself, Juliet, Kytana, and Micha far as he knew. There were no new long-standing mers and selfishly he gathered as much as he could. He would spoil that woman. Maybe it meant less because they did not have to pay...but Cristiano only picked out the most beautiful jewels to adorn his love with. She would have accessories for every outfit for a week! Earrings and rings and bracelets and tail chains.
Yet he stopped at one particular glass shelf and almost thought to put everything down and take only the ring. A seaglass ring laid with gold foil, he had given her something similar as previous but not with the love and care he wanted to give this one. It struck his heart and so he picked the one in Juliet's size (so he guessed) and held to it carefully. The rest came with him, wrapped and bagged, but this ring was special. He would, with all words he knew to use, tell Juliet he loved her as mermaid or human and promise himself to her with this ring. That he had decided. So with his bags filled he swam back to their home, realigned the gifts, and head to the Sully's home. Up the tunnel with swift, hard strokes of his great blue and yellow tail, Cris popped up at the surface and put the bags on the ledge.
"Juliet! My angelfish! Are you here?" he called into the house. Phones were stupid, who used those?
