Steve had been in the sitting room when the knock came, doodling absentmindedly while he wait for sleep to come. It was easier now than it had been when he first arrived but sleepless nights were still not entirely uncommon. Usually he spent them in bed with Peggy and Bucky, enjoying the warmth and comfort of being surrounded by the people he loved and that loved him most, but now and then he felt too awake or too restless to lay still and he didn't want to disturb their sleep-especially now that Peggy was pregnant-so he found other things to do.
He heard the motion outside the home before the actual knock and had assumed it was an animal trying to nibble what was left of Peggy's flowers. Once he heard the noise at the door though he was on his feet. The last thing he needed was for whoever was outside to get more urgent and wake the babies and he had to figure if someone was knocking on their door in the middle of the night unexpectedly it was something urgent. He opened the door quietly but in less than a moment his entire body went stiff, reflexively moving in to a slightly defensive stance. "You had better explain why you're back here well and very quickly or neither of us is going to have a good night." he warned, his voice deeper, with a far more commanding tone than he usually had on the island.
