The phones were doing that weird thing again- she hadn't touched hers in an hour, since getting back from her daily run (which were increasingly becoming fast walks the larger her belly got), yet it buzzed to life on the bathroom counter as she soaked in the tub. She knew it was Dean before he'd even gotten a word out- either by instinct or the fact that she knew his distinctly gruff throat-clearing like the sound of her own breath. Knowing where he was had come shortly afterward. The echo of an empty space and the hollow, haunting sound of the piano only meant one thing- that she knew of, anyway. It was getting her still slightly damp limbs into clothing quickly that was the real reason she was so delayed- especially during Dean's performance.
Claire had known he could sing- no, not just 'sing'... he had a real, tangible, soulful talent that reached into her every time she heard him, whether he knew she was listening or not. His voice was a spell to her, a particularly strong one when he was singing to her. She could blame it on the hormones, but deep down... this time Claire knew it wasn't just pregnancy messing with her emotional regulator.
Sure enough, Baby was parked right on the curb beneath the rarely used Opera House's front. Claire had half-jogged the whole way there, keeping some semblance of normal breath as she conversed over the CB with Dean- but she didn't cut straight through the house to the back of the seats. Something told her to keep to the wings, where she found the backstage entrance and slipped into the blue and red shadows cast by the dim safety lighting and huge velvet drops. Her shoes didn't make the echo his did, and if it wasn't for the subtle, tinny echo of his voice in the phone cupped in her hand, he may not have known that when Claire said she was already there- she was literally stepping up to him in the wings, ten feet behind. Smiling despite an obvious attempt to keep it somewhat restrained.
It wasn't the first time she'd seen him in a tux, but his daughter's wedding was a bit of a different context. Dean sure as hell looked fantastic in everything he wore, but that... that made it hard to think, especially combined with everything else. Claire pushed a tiny breath through her open lips, unable to do anything but stare, feeling her insides knot up in the best way, before finally being able to speak.
"Did you just dress up for the ghost?" she said in the same adoring and teasing tone used to deflect terrifyingly strong emotions with humor, when he finally noticed her, either by hearing himself in her phone or instinct. "You know every theater has its own ghost..."
