Despite things going pretty damn well for him on the island, Ernest had missed his sons greatly. Even if he didn't always let on. It was strange that he was a good few years older than Hemingway had remembered him, and apparently something had happened. Something he didn't understand. He'd never had Jack really talk so negatively to him before, and he hated it. He hated the way he felt his heart sink, feeling like he'd let his boy down in some way, even if he hadn't done it yet. There was time, wasn't there? Time to fix it, to heal whatever wounds he'd ignorantly inflicted?
He reached the diner, and slipped into a booth silently, finding himself just fidgeting with the corners of the menu as he waited on the man his boy had become.
