Jo couldn't sleep. It was a problem she'd been having since being brought back to this time line. She'd gotten used to sharing a bed with Dean to the point that she lay awake most nights, in that big empty bed she now slept in by herself. She managed a couple of hours but finally got fed up and got up, going into the kitchen. Might as well make herself useful. She jumped slightly when she turned on the light and saw Rory sitting at the kitchen table. "Jesus, kid." She sighed, her hand going to where she usually kept her knife. It wasn't there in her pajamas which was understandable. "Sorry." Rory muttered around a mouthful of cereal. "What are you doing sitting in the dark anyway?" Jo went over to the fridge to look around. "Didn't want to wake anybody up." He shrugged. He didn't exactly need light to be able to see. One of the advantages of his demon side. "Ah, okay." It was all she could think to say in that moment. A noise from the doorway caused them both to turn and see Mary standing there. "Couldn't sleep either?" She asked, walking over to take a seat next to Rory. Both Jo and Rory shook their heads. "Figured I'd make some breakfast." Jo smiled. "I've done that a few times since I got here." Mary chuckled softly. She got up and went to start the coffee. They'd definitely need it. Jo just nodded and gathered up what she needed to make some French toast. They were all silent for a moment before Mary spoke. "So what are we going to do about Mister Grumpy?" She looked between Jo and Rory. Rory raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" "Dean. He's been closed off and..." Before she could finish, Jo shook her head. "Oh no. We don't do anything about that." She shook her head again. "Jo's right. When Dad gets like this you just let him be like this and he'll come out of it when he's ready." "It just doesn't seem right to let him stew...." Mary said. Both Jo and Rory sighed. Rory gave Jo a questioning look and she waved her hand as if to say, go on. "Mary, here's something you have to understand. Dean has lost both of you. You died when he was a little kid and Jo here disappeared a while back. So he's been dealing with the fact that you're back here and you're probably going to end up disappearing at some point." "But.." Mary started. Rory raised his hand to silence her. "You can say whatever you want but the truth is, people come and go from this place all the time and nobody has any control over it. Dean is trying really hard to deal with the both of you being here, and he doesn't want to get too close because you might end up going away again. It's going to hurt all over again. It's like with Sam." "What about Sam?" Jo stopped what she was doing and looked at Rory. He ran his fingers through his hair. "Sam has been on this island.....four different times I think? Different versions of him. He keeps popping up and Dad'll get close to him and then he'll disappear again. Though there was one version of Sam that was a total douche and cared more about himself, but we don't talk about him." He was still mad about that version, but he just shook it off. "Mary....Dean's convinced that he's not really allowed to be happy." Jo tilted her head. "Or at least that's what I gather from the conversation he and I have had. And he doesn't want to deal with losing us all over again. Doesn't want to have to deal with it. So if he stays distant and grumpy, then maybe it won't hurt so bad if we end up going away." Mary sighed heavily as she thought about what they said. She hated that her son had gone through all of that but she could understand a little better why he was acting the way he was. "So all we can do is just sit back and let him come around on his own." It was said rather than asked. "That's exactly it." Rory nodded. "It sucks, but it's the only option. Because trying to force him to cheer up will just push him further away." It was one of the many things she'd learned about Dean over the years. They all sat in silence for a moment before Jo went back to cooking and Rory finished his cereal. Mary picked at a spot on the table while waiting for the coffee to finish. |
