Sitting on the couch beside her, Peter took the cocoa and sipped at it. He didn't really want it, but it was something to hold, something to keep his hands from shaking, and he appreciated that.
As she spoke, he stared at her in disbelief. The words she was saying...they were almost too horrible to be true, and they didn't make any sense.
"He was...but - he is a special." Was?
When she reached the worst part, his hands were shaking so hard he had to put the cocoa down on the coffee table.
"But...I - " Words failed him for a moment as he looked at her with deep pain and betrayal. Not at her, but at his mother...his mother - who had done such a thing. Claire's father had never been on his list of the most trustworthy, but despite everything, he had always loved his mother.
"Why - why would they do that?" He finally got the words out, but they were weak.
