Who: Rarity & Mary
When: 5.16 Afternoon
Where: Carousel Boutique
What: Wedding Dress Fitting
Closed

The new mother sat quietly in the sewing room of the boutique, arms crossed with one hand cupping her chin as she stared at the dresses she had pulled, modified, and otherwise prepared for Mary's arrival. She hoped they lived up to the girl's needs and expectations. "Nothing fancy," she said, but Rarity wasn't about to send any woman or man down the aisle in anything less than perfect. As far as she was aware, she had dressed most of the brides on the island since her arrival and she wanted to keep it that way. She took pride in being the one everyone went to for fashion advice, new clothes, or precious moments in their lives.

So she sat there admiring the dresses before getting up and circling around the dress on the left....it needed something more. Humming in thought, she turned and looked about the work room. It needed a belt! A bow! Yes! A bow! Her magic began to glow brightly in a soft blue around a length of ivory ribbon that then tied itself about the waist of the mannequin, a big bow with long tails draping elegantly down the back of the skirt. Perfect.

Rarity shifted on her feet, dressed in high heels and a highwaisted black slacks that belled around the ankles, a striped blouse tucked into it with the fabric billowing around the top. She was hiding her pregnancy belly in the layers and fitted clothes, her larger breasts hidden by the flowing fabric of her blouse. She took another look at the dresses and then resumed her pacing.

Upon the three mannequins were all beautiful dresses in their own right, some plainer than the others, some more fancy. Rarity had gone for a variety to let the girl choose what suited her best, and of course she could alter them as needed. The dress on the left form was the simplest in nature. It was a satin sweetheart strapless with an airy skirt of high quality organza made in three layers, all finished with a satin bias. A petticoat underneath gave it some added lift. In addition, each mannequin had a small stand to the left of the dress holding various accessories. Rarity had prepared for this dress a satin headband with an organza flower meant to be worn over the left ear, the tails of the band long enough to be wrapped up into a hair do or left hanging without trouble at the neck. She lay out a chain of diamonds for the neck and wrist and a pair of matching shoes of satin flats.

The next dress was also a strapless, sweetheart neckline in ivory with a white lace overlay throughout. It was the dress the belt had wrapped itself around, tail hanging nicely down the center back. There was no petticoat, it had enough layers and sway on its own. Up the back were fifty fabric covered buttons one after the other. On the table another headband, this of lace to match the dress, though slim and subtle, a pearl necklace and bracelet, and a pair of peep-toe flats also with a lace overlay. While the first dress was simple and elegant, this dress seemed a bit more flirty and more casual than the other two.

The final dress was the most wedding-like with a sweetheart neckline hidden underneath a soft, breathable high neck and cap sleeve lace overlay also in ivory. White might be the classical color for a wedding dress but ivory was so much more...flattering and summery. The lace ended at the seam where the skirt attached at the natural waist, a beautiful folded over and pressed lace belt covering the seam. The skirt was high-low in design with the full circle gathered around and pleated to have more life than a straight hang. In the front it ended just above the knees but the layers and pull gave it volume while the back ended just below the calf. There was a beautiful lace trim decorating the edge from the inside that matched a pair of wrist-length gloves on the table to it's left. It closed in the back, like the previous dress, with many lace covered buttons. No necklace or jewelry was required to accompany the beautiful garment so only the gloves and a pair of 1" heeled shoes rest on the table. The shoes were otherwise the same design as a pair of flats, save the heel had a slight wedge to it.

Mary was excited, almost bouncy as she made her way toward Rarity's shop. She had a small bag in one hand and a tin of shortbread she'd made with Peggy while talking about wedding details in the other.

She stepped in to the shop and immediately was taken back by the three mannequins on display. She'd never been the most fashion savvy or even conscious, usually favoring jeans and whatever shirts she thought were comfortable. But these were stunning. "Oh my...Rarity, they're perfect." She beamed a little, circling the first dress. They all managed to keep simple enough that Mary could see herself wearing them but were still far more beautiful and detailed than she could have imagined.

Rarity welcomed Mary in her usual bright, exuberant way but otherwise stood to the side and let her look over what was offered. She had plenty to say about the dresses but also felt as if they had their own words to say. Which called to Mary? Which spoke volumes to her?

"I'm glad you like them," the fashionista said as she took a step forward. "Which would you like to try on first?"

Mary had been so distracted by the dresses she forgot about her gifts at first. "Oh! First off, these are for you. And the babies." She held out the cookie tin and the little gift bag. Inside were three hooded baby towels, each with a different color scheme, red, black or purple to match the stones the little ones were named after and she'd embroidered their names along one corner.

Once she'd handed over her packages she went back to the dresses, her fingers trailing gently over the fabrics, walking between them to look at the backs and all the different angles. "I...maybe this one?" Mary paused at the most detailed on the far right. It was a bit more than she'd been thinking about, but maybe that wasn't such a bad idea. She was only getting married once.

A bit startled, Rarity blinked and looked down at the gifts. She then turned away and set them on the cutting table so she might open the tin and look inside. "Oh, these are perfectly marvelous! Thank you, Mary! You are the sweetest," she said over her shoulder before stealing a cookie from the box. While Mary chose a dress she admired the little towels with water-rimmed eyes. "I love it all, thank you."

With a careful dab at her cheek with a kerchief she then went over to the mannequin and removed the dress, gathering the accessories to take with her to the comfortably sized dressing room. "Call me when you're in. I'll button you up." She smiled warmly at the woman. You did only get married once--usually.

"Enjoy those cookies while you can, in a few years, Peggy's shortbread is basically gold around here." Mary grinned a little, letting Rarity look over the towels on her own. She'd been around new moms enough to know sometimes it was the tiniest things that made it all happen. "I'm glad, a few of us learned how to make the towels for the hospital when I was a little younger, they really do come in handy."

Mary followed carefully, chewing on her lip. She stepped in to the dressing room and just looked at the dress for a moment. She was really getting married, in just a few days. She was still smiling, though, despite the butterflies, as she slipped her clothes off, lifted the fabric off the hanger and carefully pulled the dress up. "Okay." she called out, avoiding looking in the mirror until she could see the full effect.

"I can imagine...these are delicious," the platinum blonde said as she lingered a moment longer. When at the fitting room and passing them off to Mary, she wait quietly but with excitement. This was her favorite part of the job.

The big reveal. It was never the same for her, or the person she was dressing, until they were all snapped and zipped in and stood before the proper mirror outside.

When Rarity stepped in she turned them both so their backs were to the mirror, which Mary seemed to have been doing, anyway. She buttoned her all in, which took quite a while--sorry, Stevie--and then moved to help Mary into the shoes and gloves. Then, she opened the curtain and motioned for her client to move on out, stand on the pedestal, and see herself.

Mary didn't mind the buttons, she liked the way they looked and felt, and she would find a way to use them to tease Stevie, rather than frustrate him.

She was biting at her lip a little bit as she stood up at the pedestal, her eyes closed until she'd taken a slow breath. When she finally did look, her mind just went blank a moment, she didn't know what to think. It was incredible. "I...don't even look like me." she murmured softly, "I don't think I've ever worn anything this pretty."

Rarity beamed as she took a few steps back and opened the tri-fold mirror to give her more of a view. She then turned and held up her phone that she pulled from an apron pocket. "Smile, darling!" she called. "This is for your reference, for after you put on the others. If you need to, of course."

She then stepped back in and fiddled with the hem a bit, simply nit picking. "How does it feel? What does it make you feel?"

Mary gave a shy smile for the picture, her eyes going back to the mirror once it had been taken. She smoothed her hands down the front of the dress and then twirled her hips a little. "It...I feel...royal." She wasn't exactly sure yet if that was what she wanted, but it was definitely something she'd never really felt.

"Do you feel like you're getting married?" she asked with a motion to the dress. "Personally, I feel if it doesn't make you cry upon seeing it, it isn't the dress. If you do not feel that pull in your gut that says This. Is. It! It isn't it."

"Maybe we can try the other ones." Mary murmured. The dress was gorgeous, she couldn't deny that. But she felt like maybe it wasn't quite her gorgeous dress. She'd likely spend as much of the night playing with little ones and hanging around the grill with her dads as she would dancing and talking to her guests. She worried she'd hold back from some of those things if she wore something like this.

Nodding, Rarity went off to get the first of the three, which was simple and elegant in its own way. She then came back to help Mary out of the button-down gown and into the next one. "Now," she said. "If you don't like any of these, I can work on something else. So do not be afraid to tell me you do not like them."

Mary was careful again, not looking in the mirror as she let Rarity help her in to the next dress, "I'm sure one of them will be just what I need." she reassured the other woman. And she was. She just didn't really know what she was looking for yet. Once she was in the silky, fluffy gown she was smiling again, she felt like she had when she was a little girl and she'd play dress up with Mouse. Wearing fluffy tutus and making flower crowns while they had tea in the garden.

Nodding, Rarity led Mary out of the dressing space once again and helped her onto the raised stair for her to stand and admire herself in the mirror. She backed away to get out of the picture, smiled softly, and nodded. "It's very nice," she said. "Elegant but simple. Playful but sophisticated!" A pause followed by a tilt of the head as she await the reaction to seeing oneself in the dress.

Mary let out a soft, awed breath, her mouth curving in to a gentle smile before she covered it with one hand. "Oh...wow." she mumbled, biting at one of her fingers. She finally let her teeth go of her hand once she realized she was doing it and took a quick breath. She twisted a little bit, turning and looking over her shoulder then straightening out again. She had to resist the urge to start twirling around. "I think...I think this is it." She murmured, biting her lip and grinning. She wasn't much of a happy crier but it definitely wasn't far off.

Rarity beamed, flashing her white teeth as she watched Mary, moving to fiddle with the mirrors for a new view. She looked at the reflection, then the woman twirling about.

"I'm glad, it's stunning," she said on her way back up to Mary. "How do you like the fit? Is it too tight or too loose? How do you feel about your shoes? And your accessories?"

"No, the fit is perfect." she smiled. She pushed the skirt out of the way to look at her shoes. "They look wonderful, but do you maybe have something similar with a small heel? Like the third ones but satiny?" she didn't like making so many requests but she was still a girl getting ready for her wedding, she wanted to be the best she could. "Everyone I'm gonna have to dance with is pretty tall."
