"Yeah, you might be right," he agreed, with a shrug. "It's the other way around with Caroline, so maybe that's fair. One each," he joked, even though the situation with his older daughter was painful to him. Maybe he could pretend to be the good guy with Lucy, but he'd never have Caroline fooled. No, she knew him for real.
It was funny, the way Grey just instantly wanted to defend him. He appreciated it, the way she just had his back even when he was revealing some of the less than pleasant things he'd done over the years. If anything, he felt like he wasn't hard enough on himself, so her words meant a lot to him. "No, I didn't want it to be like that. It wasn't as if it was malicious, it was just- one of those stupid things, you know?" he admitted. Everyone had conversations that they regretted. That wasn't shocking. That was normal.
He turned, his attention grabbed by the timid way she said his name. This wasn't like them, but she was probably right- no, she was definitely right. "You want to?" he repeated, although it shouldn't have been a surprise to him. Of course she did, it was just that no one ever really had before. Interested. God, she really meant it. "Maybe you'll end up hating me," he said- it had meant to be a joke, but there was far too much truth to the fear now that it was out there.
