Clint hated it. He knew he was going to break her heart no matter how kindly or gently he broke the news. But he knew too that it would be easier for her to hear from him than finding out on her own, without time to brace herself or the immediate reassurance of knowing she wasn't alone.
As soon as he'd realized their family had been affected he'd gathered up the kids in to their room. It was close enough to bed time that he let Bucky help him change the babies and Timmy, then lay everyone down, reading stories until the toddlers had fallen asleep as well. He was anxious, waiting for her to come home, but having the little ones there, in his sight, helped as much as he could be helped.
Looking up with weary eyes he sighed softly. "Sean. And Elizabeth." he told her gently, chewing on his lip for a minute, "I checked everything, the phones, JARVIS..." He sighed again, looking away, "I'm sorry Mary."
