Matt was smiling as he headed up for Isabel’s place. He was slowly visiting with those he had known before, and learning the island again. He liked this island and the people on it, and felt, really, like they were more his home than his home was, especially now that his parents were dead and his world was so different. Matt grinned as he worked up the stairs, and to the floor where isabel was staying. he took elevators sometimes, but mostly he used stairs. He liked it better that way. When he got to her door, he grinned as he knocked, bouncing. --- Isabel had been happy to see Matt was back. They hadn't talked much when he was here before but it was still good to see a familiar face. She answered the door in a simple blue sundress. She had Fran in her arms and Logan hiding behind one leg. "Hey, Matt. Come on in." She was able to step aside so he could enter the apartment. --- “Hi, Isabel! How’re you doing?” Matt smiled as he saw her and stepped inside, glancing around. Then he turned to her and gently gave her a one armed hug, trying not to disturb her precious cargo. “And who is this little beauty?” He nodded to Fran, eyes dancing. He liked kids a lot. ---- Isabel returned the hug, smiling brightly. "I'm tired but I'm good." She grinned down at her daughter. "This is Franny. Fran, this is mommy's friend Matt." She shifted the baby so Matt could get a better look. She had a lot of dark hair and bright blue eyes. "And this little guy down here is Logan." She indicated the boy hiding behind her skirt. "Eddie is around here somewhere. " She chuckled. --- “Hello, Franny.” Matt smiled to her, eyes warm with friendliness and wonder. Kids were awesome! He glanced down at Logan and waved a half-wave. “Hello, Logan, nice to meet you. I knew your mom for a little while, some time ago.” He grinned at Isabel and nodded. “Looks like you’re doing well. New body, new family...pretty darn nice.” ----------- Logan gave a little shy wave before ducking behind Isabel's skirt. She chuckled again. "He's very shy, unlike his brother." She motioned over toward the couch. "Come on, let's sit." She started to walk that way. "Things have been going pretty great. There have been some rough times but that's to be expected. How have you been, sweetie? I think the last time I saw you you were...fifteen or so?" --- “Nothing wrong with being shy.” Matt grinned. These kids were cool. “I was never shy much, but that’s just me.” He settled to where she motioned, and smiled to her again. “I’m glad things are well, now.” Her question made him smile sadly. “I was first 15, then briefly 17, then gone. I was yanked back to my world, and dropped in there, in a world gone a little crazy. I was there for two years. My parents… they were lost, before I got home.” He smiled again, then, though, as he forced himself to move forward. “Here though, now? I’m doing very good. seeing old friends anew. The weirdest part is how much has changed for people since I left.” ---------- Isabel reached over and put a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry about your parents, sweetie." She squeezed his shoulder gently. Before she could say anything else, a little boy identical to Logan but wearing different clothes crawled over and sat on the floor in front of Matt. He looked over at Isabel as he pointed at Matt. "Eddie, that's Matt." The little boy moved over and got to his feet, putting his hands on Matt's knees. He tilted his head a little. "Ma?" He said. "That's right, baby. Matt." Isabel smiled proudly. Eddie held his hands out to Matt. "Ma!" Isabel chuckled. --- Matt grinned at Eddie, and nodded. “Hi, Eddie. Matt is my name, yes.” He grinned and held out his hands to grip Eddie’s and the very floor spoke. “Hang on kid.” And the spot on the floor elongated and lifted Eddie up to Matt. “Nice to meet you.” -- “Lap!” Eddie said, looking at Matt. Isabel just watched him for a moment. “How did I not know you could do that?” She tilted her head. --- Matt settled Eddie to his lap, and grinned at him, ruffling his hair. “And how many are you?” He glanced at Isabel. “On account of I’d learned to suppress it to not frighten people off the first time I talked to them by the time I met you. Now I almost never do.” He grinned and the ground under Isabel wiggled and spoke. “Ands because we rarely have anything to say. We’re the nice ones, unlike some of the other things.” -------- “Eddie isn’t quite sixteen months old.” Isabel smiled. The baby curled up in Matt’s lap, very comfortable. Isabel chuckled. “That’s...amazing, Matt.” She smiled. “You know I’m a genie, right? Things have changed since you were here, but I’m pretty sure I had that before you left.” She shifted Fran in her arms so she could help Logan up onto the couch. --- Matt Gently rubbed Eddie’s back. He’d had some experience with kids before and loved them, and he was glad to just hold the kid and help him relax. He smiled back to Isabel. “I remember, yeah. How is that going for you?” The couch shifted, making steps so Logan could get up easier. --- Logan crawled over Isabel’s lap to sit next to Matt, leaning against him. Isabel smiled. “It’s actually going a lot better. I don’t have the lamp anymore and I’ve learned that I can use my magic to defend myself. It’s….evolved quite a bit. I’m actually happy about it. Hell, Franny is even here because of it. I couldn’t have kids and then Sean made this wish...he didn’t realize he was doing it, it was just kind of in his head. But it was so deep and sincere that it happened. And now we have this little lovely.” She kissed Franny’s head. --- Matt smiled at Logan, gently patting his hair, too, even as he held Eddie. This was… actually pretty cool. He listened as Isabel talked, impressed. “Very cool! Learning to use my powers was wild, and slow, but its been fun.” Matt grinned wider. “Awesome! i’m glad things are working out so well for you.” ----------- “And it seems that my boys love you.” She smiled. “I’m so glad you’re back, Matt.” She leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Do you need a place to stay, sweetie? The apartment next to this one is empty.” She patted his cheek. ---- “They’re pretty cool. Just like you.” He grinned at her. “And I do have a place, but thanks.” He bluished at the kiss on the cheek. “I’m glad to be here. I missed it a lot. It feels more like home than home did.” ---------- “I know exactly what you mean, honey.” She nodded. “You want something to drink? I could make some tea or I have some juice or milk….” She started to get up. “We don’t really drink anything else.” --- “Wait, No need to get up.” Matt grinned and his backpack wiggled and slid along from his back, opening to spit out two ice cold water bottles. “Here, my treat. Ice cold, from back in my world. Pure water.” He handed one over to Isabel. “I’m glad to come over, and maybe if there are times when you and your beau want some privacy, if these lads and the lass are willing, I’d be willing to watch them for you. I had a lot of experience watching some kids back home, and here, and on the train before that.” And in Hell, too, but he tried not to tell people about that anymore. ------- “Thank you, sweetie.” She took the bottle of water and the lid twisted off by itself before she took a drink. She smiled softly. “I’m afraid you’ll have to fight Tim and TJ for that privilege. He does love watching his baby cousins. And I think that he and TJ are practicing for the future.” She wiggled her eyebrows at him before taking another drink of water. --- “That’s cool. Sounds awesome. Someday, maybe I’ll have kids, if the universes stop jerking me around.” Matt smiled to himself, thinking of those he knew and hoped for. “For now, I’m just glad to be around to help with yours.” ---------- “Thank you, Matt. I really mean it.” She nodded. “I bet Sophia is ecstatic that you’re back, huh? And Mitchell’s probably happy but not happy at the same time.” She chuckled. ---- “I hope so. We’re talking and things are a little odd. After the train, originally, Sophia and I lived in a world together and grew older together. But then I was sent back, and so was she, and now the girl who is here only remembers the train. And I feel a little worried.” Matt looked down as he said it. ---- “Just keep talking, Matt. That’s all you can do.” She patted his shoulder again. “If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen.” She nodded. “She’s lost a lot of people here. You being back is a really good thing.” --- “I’ll do my best.” He smiled at her. And he nodded at her words. “If it can be, it will, and if not… I’ll find my own way.” He smiled a little more. “I hope so. This place, and the train before it are like home. I want it to be a home for those I care about too, including you.” He poked her gently. “If you need anything, let me know. “ --- She smiled and nodded. “I definitely will, sweetie. Even if it’s just running to the store for some milk or something.” She set the bottle of water down and ran her fingers through her hair. “You’re a good kid, you know?” She kissed his cheek again. “Think after you finish your pub duty you’d like to come help in the diner? Right now it’s just me and Lacey and Max and Julie. We could use a cute guy on the staff.” She smirked. ------- Matt nodded. “Good.” He would be glad to help. “Not a kid, but thanks.” He grinned and smiled wider. “Sure! And even before I’m done there. “ He blushed fiercely at being called a cute guy. “I’d love to work with you.” --------- “You’re younger than I am therefore you are a kid.” She chuckled. “That’s great. I’ll talk to Lacey. She’s running the place while I’m on maternity leave but I’ll be back to being in charge in no time.” --- Matt stuck out his tongue at her for that one and then smirked. “Cool! I want to get busy again and try to be around as much as I can.” He smiled wider. “Work, and talking to people, and getting to know this place again. That is my plan, for now.” ------ “There’s definitely plenty of work to do around here.” She nodded. “Just ask around and there’s all kinds of people looking for help with grunt work. And Steven is always looking for extra help around the hospital. He pretty much runs the nonmedical staff.” She smiled as she looked over at Eddie and Logan, both fast asleep curled up against Matt. “Looks like you’re stuck for a little while there.” She chuckled softly. --- “I’ll look into it. Thanks.” He glanced at the two, then shrugged, gently. “Well, I had no plans. Mind if I nap here, then?” He grinned at her widely. This was starting out to be a really cool return home. -------- “Nap all you want, sweetie.” She got up and moved over to kiss his forehead. “It usually takes a bit to get them down. Must be something they like about you.” She chuckled. “You’ll have to brag to Tim that you got them down for a nap without even trying.” She grinned. “Want me to get you a blanket?” ---- “Sure, that would be great!” He spoke quietly but enthusiastically, as he shifted slightly and settled in. The couch conformed to them, and partly slid up their sides, becoming almost a large closely fitting chair to them all. --- She waved her hand and a cozy fleece blanket appeared over them. “They’re usually good for a couple of hours but if you wake up before they do, just let me know, okay?” She leaned down and gave both Eddie and Logan a kiss on the forehead as well. “Sweet dreams, boys.” She whispered. --- “I will.” He cuddled them in, and then smiled to her. “See you later.” And he closed his eyes. This? This was the best… |
