There'd never been anything quite like this in her heart.
Yes, she loved Steve with all her soul and her love for Bucky grew every moment he spent with her, letting her cheek him and boss him around with a smile on his lips. But the tiny thing, pink and squiggly and soft and oh-so-breakable... now that was a love, undying and unrepentant and something Peggy had been utterly unprepared to feel. The labour had been easy for the most part, until Bruce had told her Sarah's heart rate had plummeted and it was a case of emergency. Peggy thanked all she had that her daughter was simply alive and breathing.
But still. She was tiny, for something that had been so damned painful to push out of her body and Peggy couldn't quite get her sore brain around it. Her eyes were a little less tired than they'd been yesterday but she was still unable to walk too far. Mouse had been stubborn to the end of her birth and proved difficult to prise away from the womb. Peggy, dressed in her pyjamas and a silk dressing gown to feel human, saw her little girl fussing around in her hospital crib, her own pyjamas a little too big to be normal.
"Hello beautiful." Peggy whispered, yearning to reach out and take the baby in her arms. "I love you more than you'll ever know, my wonderfulo little Mouse." Her little finger stroked down the baby girl's cheek gently and Peggy just sat there staring at her daughter.
In that moment, there were no monitors bleeping her daughter's vitals, no heat lamp, nothing but the little baby and her soft-as-silk skin.
