Wanting to escape the chaos of her own home, Peggy bundled her little boy into his new shoes, tiny as anything, and took his hand as they walked around the island together. Stevie, nearly two years old already, pointed out everything to her and she told him the names, beaming as he tried to repeat the word, stumbling over certain phoneme combinations. Peggy needed some respite from two brooding men, a colour-changing cat and a rambunctious puppy who created chaos and ate her out of house and home. Breakfast usually consisted of Stevie getting porridge all over him and somehow all over the cat and dog too. Once, she'd even found the chickens with oats in their feathers after he'd wanted to help collect the eggs.
Taking his hand, Peggy walked slowly for Stevie, making their way through the park and the fields to the town centre so she could find some new paint for Stevie's room. She was so pregnant now, nearly seven months along and felt like a house on stilts, but still wanted to keep cleaning, keep changing her home to keep it immaculate. She knew it was her nesting instinct kicking in, like all the pregnancy books told her but part of her thought it was her trying to ignore the ache in her chest from missing her mother and father and her grandmother and brother.
She loved her life but just now and then all she wanted was to take a walk with her son and remind herself of the new family she had made.
"Cat!" Stevie said suddenly, pointing across the road to a black and white cat.
"Yes, like your kitty." Peggy replied, his little hand gripping hers with incredible strength.
