"Za’u fìtseng, ma Jake!"
Neytiri was calling for him again. Tsu'tey had been looking for him a while back, wanting to go hunting for the strange nantangs that had dared to injure Toruk Makto, and Grace had been calling for him to help her collect some samples from the strange trees, but he'd ignored them as best he could. Neytiri, though. Her voice tore through him - he hadn't heard it for almost six months, and if he'd been able to put any amount of weight on his right ankle, he'd have been after her like a shot, he knew it. Just like he knew he couldn't trust her voice, not in this place.
"Nga kin za'u fitseng, ma Jake. Oel zene ngati kameie!"
She was starting to sound annoyed now, but Jake just stayed quiet and watched the fog for shadows. He couldn't see her anywhere. Her voice was circling him, echoing out from the fog and coming from all directions, but never once did she step close enough that he could see her. He stayed where he was, huddled in the roots of the weird tree he'd slumped against however long ago, and kept a tight hold on his crutch.
There were other sounds in the fog as well, that reminded him of the nantangs from long ago, back before he learned to See. As he watched the fog, he gradually began to see shadows flickering past, but they were not the shadows he was expecting. They were not the shadows of one of the People, and they were not nantangs either. And then one of them came close enough for him to see it properly and his heart sank. It was one of those things that had been dragging him off somewhere before, and as he watched, another one stepped forward. And another.
Jake laughed humorlessly, and shifted his grip on his crutch. "You have got to be fucking kidding me," he muttered, just as another thing stepped out of the fog and growled at him. He hissed back, even though it didn't work properly with his tawtute throat, and got ready to fight them off as best he could.
[OoC: Rescue time, yay! For those who wish to do the thread of everyone going through the Nevernever, Loz has started that back here.]
