Getting the message from Steve, Sook had melted at the sweet, incredibly romantic suggestion from her friend's partner. Too few times had boyfriends and girlfriends come to her for help in giving gifts and it was just so nice to be able to help for a change. Sook had to admit she loved making new things and figuring out how to construct an orange cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese icing like he'd suggested let her be a little bit handy with the decoration. Sook made a moist orange cake with whole candied orange peels in the batter and let it to cool while she made her raspberry ripply filling, folding raspberries and raspberry sauce into creme patissiere (she'd been reading new recipes a lot at home) with a little whipped cream to make it light. Topping the whole lot off was her classic cream cheese frosting and Sook boxed up the mini cake for two in a pink box she'd managed to find in the stores on the island.
Leaving the bakery to Abi for a few moments, Sook attached the note that Steve had left for her. It had taken all her will not to read what it said (Peggy would just tell her the next time she saw her anyway), but Sook kind of liked that a boyfriend had done something so romantic. Her Gran must have been right when she said to Sook that there's always one good apple in a bad bunch; you just had to find the perfect apple. Cake in hand, Sook knocked and waited patiently. She was running a little late but couldn't wait to see the look on Peggy's face.
Peggy opened up the door with Stevie balanced on her hip. He squealed when he saw Sook and especially what was contained in her hands. "Hello Sook," Peggy said with a soft smile, "What brings you round? Need my help?"
Sook shook her head with a twinkle in her eye and held out the box, "You're on my delivery route. Steve gave me explicit instructions to make you an orange cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese icing. He even left a note for you."
Peggy took the extended box with a bit of a shocked smile on her lips, "Oh god, he really is the sweetest man."
Meanwhile, Stevie had spotted the cake through the window on the top of the box and went a bit crazy, "CAKE! CAAKE! MAMA!" He clapped his little hands and Peggy laughed.
"I guess I'll be sharing this with more than just Steve. Thank you so much for this Sook, it looks amazing."
"Don't mention it. It's for you, Peg, you know I love you both so much." Sook played with Stevie's fingers, pretending to eat them and made him giggle. "I should get back, though. I left the new girl on her own and I don't want her burning down the storage room. I really need to clean that..." she muttered the last part absently. "Hope you like the cake."
"I know I will." Peggy said, "Orange and raspberry sounds amazingly delicious. I'll be in tomorrow morning, 8am like normal."
After saying their quick goodbyes and letting Stevie down into his playpen in the living room, Peggy sat on the couch and opened the note from Steve...
