Damon wasn't sure he'd ever felt so panicked in all his life. Okay, well maybe once or twice, but it had still been pretty terrifying to think he'd lost Elena for good. Especially after he'd been such a dick to her over the pregnancy. She was having his baby! That was a good thing. But he, clever as always(!), had pushed her away and made her feel bad. It wasn't her fault, any of this. If anything, he should have been more careful when the train had turned him human. He'd just had no idea anything like this would, or could, happen. He'd needed time to think, that was all; to think about what Elena meant to him, how much he loved her, and how amazing what had happened really was. Although he was terrified he'd be a shit father, how could he not get excited at the thought of having a family with the woman he loved? A family that she wanted. He'd given her what she'd always wanted - the chance to have a normal life and be a mother and raise a family. So what if it wasn't conventional? It didn't matter. He was a vampire, she was a human but their baby would be the most loved little thing that had ever lived. Hadn't he always known that, deep down, he had so much love to give, if only he had the chance? Well, now he had the chance, with Elena and with their child.
He'd been on his way to tell her all that when he'd been snatched here. She'd been going for a prenatal appointment and she'd asked him to be there. He'd said he didn't want to be but he'd changed his mind. God, he'd changed his mind! Then he was here and he hadn't been able to find his Elena and everything had felt like it was overwhelming him. But then he'd heard her voice and she'd been mad at him and glad he was there and it had felt like his heart was going to burst with happiness. Whatever weird little family they might have, the thought that he could have lost it all nearly tore him apart.
When she'd told him where she was, Damon had begun running. He wasn't sure he'd ever run so fast for so long in all his vampire life. He just wanted to find her and hold her and tell her he was so, so sorry for all he'd put her through. He found the apartment building, clearly visible, even through the driving wind and ice that whipped all around him. His arm up, shielding his eyes, Damon found the door to the building and burst into the warm and dry, ice still clinging to his clothes and skin. Fuck, it was cold. But he didn't care. He just needed to get to Elena. She would warm him up; just the sight of her always made him feel warm inside.
Racing up the stairs of the building, Damon searched the floor numbers until he found the one Elena had given him. It only took him a few minutes to find the apartment but he stopped short, just outside, catching his breath. He knew he must look a mess, his skin slightly blotchy from where the ice had hit him as he'd run, but he didn't think Elena would care. He wouldn't have cared what she looked like right then, as though she could be anything other than perfect. Stepping up to the door, Damon knocked loudly and urgently.
