Jenny was early shift, and had been woken from her sleep with the news that one of her patients had gone into labour- it was really how many of her mornings in East London began, and there had seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary as she quickly changed into her uniform, snatched a piece of toast, loaded herself onto her bicycle and set out with a little ring of her bell and a wave farewell to her fellow nurses.
She pedalled through the familiar streets, weaving through traffic, smiling and waving at the people who wished her a good morning, ducking under lines of washing as they were hung out to dry and skirting around slop water as it was chucked from the doorways of tenement buildings.
And then she turned a corner, and after a matter of seconds she realised this was a street she had never been down before- and it seemed so much quieter than the rest of the city. This wasn't the right way.
She about turned, and tried to turn back into the street she had just been on- but no, this wasn't the right street, either. Or the next- bugger!
She slowed, hopped off of her bicycle and dashed over to a nearby pedestrian as soon as she spotted them.
"Excuse me! Sorry to bother you, but do you happen to know the quickest way to Priory Lane?" she asked of them, holding out her little sheet of notepaper, and pointing to the address she was hoping to attend.
