The little churchyard was strangely one of the calmest places Marta had found on the island, if not the calmest, and she found herself walking round to it almost every day despite the fact that she was going to sit by her own grave. She would bring coffee and something to read (today's work of choice being a virology journal she had found in her office), and she sat there for at least twenty minutes a day. She read as she walked from her office, and she was currently engrossed in an article all about "Membrane Penetration Assay for Single Cells with Single Virus Resolution", which was why she didn't see the man sitting on the bench until she was almost on top of him.
"Oh! Oh, I'm really sorry, I didn't see you," she stammered, quickly closing her journal and putting it in her bag before smiling at the man. "Hello, I'm Marta. I don't think we've met before?"
