“Oh I believe you,” Meg said, matter of factly. She gestured in a circle around her own face, leaving a halo of cigarette smoke to frame her features. “It’s the face. The real face. Hard to fake that and I’ve been looking at in the mirror long enough to recognize it. Shifter couldn’t pull that off.” She took a last drag on her cigarette before flicking it away from her in a blaze of embers. Her double had made an interesting choice in words. What did she intend to do about this situation? It was easy, really. She didn’t intend to do anything. She was looking at herself, after all, and while she’d had reasons enough to hate herself in the past, that was a very long time ago. Those were feelings she’d left in Hell with all the rest of her human baggage, and she certainly didn’t think killing herself, even in this abstract sense, was going to mark as the picture of perfect health. Besides, she couldn’t know what loyalties this woman had, and what enemies she might gain by hurting her. If she was honest with herself, she didn’t even know if she could do anything to her. They were the same person. In theory, they’d be equal in every way, so getting the drop on her or overpowering her were probably out of the question.
No, she wasn’t going to do anything to her. There was no reason to. Nothing to gain. Nothing to lose by leaving her alone, except maybe a little peace of mind. But the real question was, did she want her to know that? Would it be a sign of weakness admitting that she had no ill intentions? Would it be better to let her live in fear that she’d one day turn on her?
“I’m not going to do anything about this,” she said before she’d made the conscious decision to speak, one way or the other. She sighed and glanced sideways at the woman. “Girl has to watch her own ass, cause Lucifer knows no one else will.” She felt oddly like she was bartering a deal, and she wasn’t entirely sure that the sensation was too far off the mark. She raised one eyebrow in her direction, clearly waiting to see if the sentiment was reciprocated.
