Juliet nodded silently, lowering the child down till it was laying in her lap. A small fist reached up and rubbed at the small chubby face, eyes blinking open followed by a mouth that stretched into an almighty yawn.
"She looks okay," she said, still a little numb, her voice completely flat. The tiredness of the last three days were finally fighting against the tide of adrenalin that had powered her through the door and into the room. The bundle started wriggling a little, feet kicking away at the blankets tangled around the lower body. Juliet untangled them, little legs kicking happily once freed of their bonds. "Everything seems to be okay."
Her eyes lifted and looked back toward the room, then down at the baby. "What happened? Who could do something like this?" She lifted her gaze again to Jake's face, as if searching for some answer. The fact that she had dealt with creatures capable of doing this and worse was far from her mind right then, and it felt like she was in a fog. "Why?"
