Who: Marian and Connor
Where: In the hall of doors.
What: Connor and Marian glare
When: Wednesday?
Rating: Low, but there may be some language.
Open: no
Status: on going. match-up

Marian stood before the door. Staring at it. All she would have to do was twist the knob. And it would be simple as that. No one would know she was in. Because she would return before she was missed. How bad could it be? How bad?

Her hand dropped to the knob, feeling the pressure behind it. All it would take...

Slowly she released the breath she didn't realize she was holding and turned the knob.

Only have it to turn and open from the other end. Connor stood on the other side of the door, covered in dirt, grime and dried sweat from his shift helping with search and rescue. His own team had already gone back hours ago, but he'd stayed behind to coordinate with Rogers and was looking forward to a hot shower and clean bed.

The highlander stared at Marian for a moment, uncomprehending, before his brain kicked in. "Please tell me you weren't about to do what I think you were?"

At his question Marian squared her shoulders and put on her most stubborn face. "And if I was? I can almost guarantee that there are pregnant woman through that door." She knew how many people had been in New York City in 2009. There was bound to be several thousand pregnant women that were farther along than she was.

"I can do more than just... Watch monitors that I don't understand." Sure she was smart, but there was only so much technology that she understood. And that was the sort that was simple enough for a monkey to grasp.

"There are probably several thousand of them in New York," Connor replied evenly, stepping through the door and pulling it firmly shut behind him. "I can guarantee you none of them are working in the disaster zone. We have no clue what those things might be giving off or how it could affect a child and its mother. Even if that weren't the case, the area is a mess, buildings are on the edge of collapse and everywhere is covered in debris. It's no place for someone who isn't moving as fast as they used to be."

"Are you so sure about that? If there are a couple thousand, that not one single solitary one is out doing what she can to help others?" He didn't scare her. But then anyone that knew her would know she didn't have a healthy sense of self preservation. The only thing she'd done to save her own arse was dress as a man when she went gallivanting around the country side. And doing good for the people of Nottingham.

"Not if any of the first responders catch them, they aren't." Connor responded. "The immediate crisis is over."

It was on the tip of his tongue to tell her if she wanted to help she could roll bandages or prepare cold lunches, but he knew that would simply shut her down to listening to what he had to say. "Marian, you've got someone else who depends on you now. Yes Robin grows up to be a fine young man but that won't happen if his mother doesn't take care of herself before he's born or gets herself killed when a piece of masonry or a girder falls on her."

"Do you honestly think I'm stupid enough to hang about where there are falling bits of building? I wouldn't attempt to pull people to safety. I can't do that for more vain reasons than for self preservation. I'd rather not pull on a bit of rubble and end up weeing myself. But I can help bandage wounds, in a safe area. I can..." Marian growled in frustration. Why did no one get it? Why was it all about the mound in front of her and not what she could do around it?

Connor couldn't understand it. Marian had been granted a gift he would never enjoy and she treated it like it was an annoyance to be overcome instead of something to be cherished and protected. At least she was showing more common sense than she had when she'd wanted to spar in his dojo a few weeks past.

"You can do that perfectly well over here. Maybe a few days from now once things have calmed down a bit. As far as I'm concerned there isn't a safe area there yet."

"Not with the people who don't live over here. I can't. I can walk, where others may not be able to, I can use my hands where others may not be able to. Explain to me why women are suddenly thought of as invalids the moment they announce that they're with child. I'm not so rotund that I can't perform the simplest of tasks." She knew she couldn't, or shouldn't lift over a certain amount. And she hadn't been. But the thought that she couldn't do anything was grating.

"No one's saying your an invalid, but is it so wrong of us to want to protect those of you carrying the next generation?" Connor retorted, crossing his arms and scowling back at her. "I've seen too much death over the centuries, especially among women."

"When they all but say 'all you're good for is sitting there and watching the pretty blinking lights, and make sure that none of them go out, if they do then hit this shiny button here and tell someone, don't go looking for why', then yes, they are." She gritted her teeth at them. "Just like when they say 'You can't do something you've done almost all your life, save for maybe with a foam rubber sword rather than wood one'." She gave him scowl for scowl. "Something tells me you're quite good at telling someone they're useless."

"Why are you so bloody determined to go over there anyway?" Connor stared at her, exasperated. "You're eight months pregnant for heaven's sake! You ought to be resting up and relaxing while you can, not sticking your neck out for strangers."

"Because people need help over there, and... And I can't sit over here and twiddle my thumbs and pretend they don't. I've never done. And never will do. Pregnant or not." She just wasn't that sort of person. To sit idly by while someone else suffered. Not while she was well, and could help.

"Now you have a choice you can knowingly let me go, and let me make this choice, or I'll simply wait until your gone and go anyway." She pursed her lips obstinately. "You are neither my husband nor my father, and I can promise you that I am far from needing a protector."

"What you need is someone to sit on you and save you from yourself," Connor stepped aside. "But that won't be me. You ought to be conserving your energy, but if its this important to you, on your own head then,"

"It is, very important. Thank you." Marian saw no point in conserving energy when whatever she gained she lost in a days time. When there was something she could do with it. And feel good when she fell into her bed, then she was going to do it.

Connor watched her go through the door and shook his head. He'd met his share of stubborn women before, but this was ridiculous.

He just hoped nothing happened to her.
