Who: Abigail Haerns and Cassandra
Where: Cassandra's apartment
What: Meeting her 'guide' to pre-space Earth of the 1930s AD
When: Backdated to Monday 26 August
Rating: TBD likely low
Open: To anyone else who wanted Cass's help (Auggie and Annie?)
Status: Threaded, in progress

Abigail made her way the short distance from her apartment to that of Cassandra's, curious to see what the other woman would have. Most of the people here seemed to be from a little later in the past than the time period the door opened to, not that eighty years mattered much to her when they were talking two thousand years in the past to begin with.

She reached the door and knocked.

Cassandra opened the door and smiled at the young woman standing there as she greeted her. "You must be Abigail, do come in. I'm Cassandra and I have some things for you all ready."

"I am, and thank you for your assistance." Abigail told her sincerely. "I'd have about as much clue what someone from that time wore as you would for the even more ancient Romans. So when I saw your offer I jumped at it!"

Cass resisted telling the young woman that in fact she had quite some knowledge of that era, her time in the courts of Marcus Aurelius some of her favourites.

"I'm happy to be able to help. I hope these are suitable," she said showing Abigail into the room opposite Cass's, still empty, thankfully. Cass wasn't quite sure how she would go with the concept of sharing accommodations with strangers after all this time, but as she had in the past she had decided to just make the best of what the fates would throw at her.

She indicated the dress, shoes and other items laid out on the bed. "Why don't you try them on while I make us tea, or coffee?"

"Coffee would be wonderful, thank you." Abigail responded. "I'll go see if everything fits."

She went into the spare bedroom and tried on the clothing laid out for her. Everything seemed to fit reasonably well and she studied her reflection in the mirror, the clothing reminded her of some of the more traditional dresses back home. There were a few differences, the hem line was higher and there weren't as many layers, but the similarity was there.

After double checking her reflection to make sure everything was in its proper place Abigail made her way out of the bedroom and back into the common area.

Cassandra had been pleased when one morning she had come out and her specialist coffee maker was on the kitchen bench. All she had to do now was make sure she could access supplies of the beans, even raw and she could roast them herself. It was something she was planning to bring back a large supply of from through the door.

When Abigail returned she looked the young woman up and down, head tilted to one side a little as she signalled for her to turn around.

"Yes, that looks fine. You should pass without barely a look. Well except for those looking for their own pleasure!" She smiled and moved back to the counter. "Do you take sugar? Cream? Milk?"

Abigail smiled at the compliment. "Thank you. I have no idea what to expect, really, so someone to help figure things out is a great help."

She shook her head, still smiling. "I've gotten too used to coffee brewed the Navy way put anything in it, black is fine."

Cass nodded, picked up the two coffee cups and walked back around the counter. She held one out to Abigail before taking a sip of her own.

"So what do you know of the era we are going to? Anything at all?"

"It depends on what you mean by 'know'." Abigail replied after a moment. "I could tell you about several naval battles on Earth's Pacific Ocean that took place around that time, we had to study them in my advanced tactics class when I was a Midshipwoman at Saganami Island. Aside from that?" She shook her head. "Not very much I'm afraid, bits and pieces really."

"Really?" The fact that battles of that era were still being studied so far into the future was intriguing to her. She wondered if she would live through to see that.

"In these battles I'm guessing there wouldn't have been much about the behaviour of women in this time. So let me fill you in on a few things that might be helpful." Cass went on to explain to Abigail about the culture in the US and its East Coast in the 30s, and what to be aware of, as they drank their coffee.

"So it would be a definite attention getter to let any of your close combat skills be put on display!" she added with a soft chuckle. "Women were starting to make a little headway in this age, but they'd only had the right to vote for less than twenty years, to give you some idea."

Abigail shook her head again and smiled. "That's actually longer than we had on my homeworld. It doesn't sound all that different as far as how women were treated up until a few years ago. We were precious flowers who had the ultimate job of wife and mother and couldn't be sullied with anything like actual work outside the home!"

"Really? And here I thought the technology age would have seen women with more equality to the point where it didn't matter. That's made me a little sad." She sighed and finished the last of her coffee, standing up and straightening her own outfit.

"Well, I guess it's as good a time as any to head across, if you're ready?"

"Oh it is that way most places, but Grayson is something of a special case." Abigail explained, briefly filling Cassandra in about the heavy metal toxicity of Grayson and the near extinction of the colony at founding. Women had been in the role of wife and mother for so long because for the first several generations that was all they could be if Grayson was going to have a future. "Fortunately for me, Lady Harrington came along and showed us what women could really do."

She nodded at Cassandra's question and stood up, checking her own outfit. "Ready to go."

"I see, that does make a difference, the need to save a race from extinction," Cass mused, leading the way to the door, collecting her rather large handbag and gloves, and affixing her fascinator.

"Let's go and take a look on the 'other side'!"

"Adventure awaits!" Abigail quipped, stepping through the doorway before Cassandra and letting her lock it after her.
