Peggy watched with tension as he studied her damaged hands and she saw his mind racing over as he looked at his own smooth-as-silk palms. He couldn’t wear his scars on the outside like she did but his ran deeper than any she had ever known and it broke her to see him studying each other like he did. She swallowed and let him feel her heart beating, hoping that it would convince him that this wasn’t a nightmare, that it wouldn’t be snatched away in a dark storm. Not while there was still breath in her body would she ever give up looking for him.
She blinked as the baby cried out and the spell was broken too soon. Kid sure had timing. But when Steve’s demeanour changed in an instant, she frowned. “Stay here. Let me.” She commanded like his superior and got up, going for the baby’s room before Steve could even think to react. Peggy lifted the crying baby out of the crib and held him close to her body, rocking him back and forth as he cried. “Shhh, my love. It’s alright now.” She padded back into the bedroom where she’d left his little bear that the baby so adored.
