James was glad that she accepted the offer of a drink, partially because it was his usual coping method, partially because it gave him a moment to move away from her. It prevented that initial awkward silence, and it stopped him from just launching himself at her. That wouldn't do at all. Keep your distance. Aloof, uncaring. No matter how far from the truth it is.
He gave her a forced smile and a nod, before disappearing off to the kitchen. He took out two glasses, and poured wine- not his usual drink of choice, but it seemed a bit excessive to offer her a straight spirit, and beer wasn't quite going to cut it.
He took probably a little longer than was necessary, leaning against the counter and staring at the glasses with a sort of glazed expression. Snapping out of it, he turned and headed back to Vesper, handing over a glass and sitting down, keeping a little distance between them.
He took a drink, not sure what to say.
"It's been quite a while. Since you-" he frowned slightly. "It's been a long time since you last saw me," he tried to explain, even though it probably complicated things even further.
