He snorted, a completely undignified sound, but didn't care. A smile crossed his features, genuine, happy. Burns did hurt, and she would never know just how much. But she understood how unfair it was, at least, to not be able to touch her. But she was safe from him that way, and that was all that mattered. He couldn't hurt her anymore. Thomas snuck a glance at her again, meeting her eyes while she was watching him. She was beautiful, so beautiful he didn't know how he could ever forget it.
"The house," he said, "I found it last week. Don't ask me how it got here, but it did. Same with the car. Just showed up one day. Keys were in my pocket."
He reached for the radio, turning the volume up a bit more, not that he needed it to hear the music clearly. He tapped his fingers on the wheel. "The island's a strange place, not anymore weird than some of the places you've been," or he'd been, "but.. " he shrugged nonchalantly again. "We're stuck here til Harry does his thing."
The drive took them out of the city and into the countryside. Thomas followed the road along the woods and turned into it, eerily passing through the forest. His eyes swept left and right in search of any suspicious activity. But the half-mile drive ended abruptly, and the Estate loomed ahead of them out of the woods. It was beautiful, expansive, and kind of creepy by all manner of the word. But it was home and it went with his image. He looked at Justine carefully, knowing she'd been under Lara's 'watch' for the last nine years.
