Briseis had always been a morning person, making the bakery a perfect job for her. She woke up every morning, and before dawn she would have doughnuts and cakes and cookies baking in the oven, sending out into the town around her the pleasant smells of morning. It comforted her to have a task to do, something to keep her mind off of the sadness of this month. She had not loved Imrhail, but it had been a long time since she had a friend she could talk to, a man she could trust. And she missed him deeply, even if what they had shared had been, perhaps in the eyes of some, less than moral.
Despite that, it had helped her in ways that nothing else had, helped her to reclaim her autonomy and sexuality from those who had stolen it from her. And she would always think on him fondly for that, even if he did not love her, and had a wife at home. And even if his daughter had always hated her.
As the sun rose, she took the fresh buns from the oven and put the in the glass case, smiling as it filled with delicacies for those who would be awaking soon. There was no cost, of course, no money in this place, but nonetheless, she consider this her payment for the life that this place had given her. Even after the loss of the past month, it was better than what she had before she arrived here.
She heard the door open, and the bell on her door tinkle, and called out before looking up.
"Good morning! What can I do for you?"
