F'lar listened with patience, because while he was not at all familiar with the things that Jake spoke of, he was genuinely interested in learning about them. And it was interesting to speak with a man who exhibited such eager enthusiasm for the world from which he'd come. Pandora. A place of beauty, mystery and intrigue. Though the beauty of the world was marred, in F'lar's mind, by the knowledge that if Threadfall were to touch it it would destroy it in heartbeats.
Pern lacked most manner of greenery in large portions, but that was for everyone's sake. Though it made the land look barren and empty. The places that did have green thrived though, and were kept safe from Thread by dragons. Not a perfect system, but it worked well enough.
Then the conversation turned to ikrans, and F'lar leaned forward in his own excitement. "Wait," he interrupted, shaking his head in puzzlement. "Your ikrans try to kill you? Why?" he couldn't comprehend that! The dragons were clumsy when they hatched, and in their excitement to Impress they tended to flock over the candidates without thinking. That was the only time a dragon ever hurt someone, and it wasn't their fault.
"What is--" he made a vague gesture, "say-hey--I'm not pronouncing that right am I?" He shook his head again and finally remembered he'd been given a beer. There was a first time for everything, so he took a drink with a little curiosity behind his eyes.. and found it wasn't bad tasting.
