Gatsby didn't have a damn clue what to expect about Fitzgerald's visit. Maybe he had been stupid to invite the man for tea in his own home. He was clearly unhinged, and there was no saying what might happen. He should have met him in a public place. Still, Gatsby was sure he could handle himself, if necessary.
He'd put his energy into setting up things for tea, something that was so much easier now that he was in his own home. They still had no electricity, but it was a modern commodity that Gatsby could do without. There was gas for heating water, and candles for light.
As usual when he was feeling nervous, he'd gone a little bit over the top. He'd set up a lavish spread, and he was standing looking over it all, fussing-
"Is this right? Am I missing something? Do you think it's all right?" he asked Nick, in a fluster. His concern about their song, about Nick's birthday- it had all faded into the background. They needed each other, now. They needed to be a united front, not pushed apart by any sort of discomfort.
