Merry was glad the power was back on. While he'd grown up without electricity, as they called it, he'd gotten used to it pretty quickly and really didn't want to see it go. Especially as it was a lot hotter here than it ever got in the shire, and he didn't particularly enjoy having his curly hair plastered to his forehead with sweat. It was disgusting, it was.
But today the air was blowing on him as he got ready in the morning, and when he got to the pub it was cool, too. Which was a real blessing, really. He got to work, wiping down the tables and the bar, making sure they had enough clean glasses for the rush - basically just double checking all the routines that had become quite commonplace since he had arrived here. And after this weekend, it felt good to have routines.
He hadn't fought himself, because he wouldn't have been much use. He realized that, even as he felt a bit useless, as he had when Pippin had gone with Aragorn to the Morannon, and he had been left behind in the Houses of Healing. Small though he might be, and as cheerful as he usually was, these things brought back terrible memories that he didn't particularly want to remember. All the hopelessness and despair, and the smell of death, and the darkness of the Nazgûl's poison...were things that he wanted left in the past where they belonged.
He heard the door open, and without turning around, he called out in a cheerful voice.
"Good day to you, what can I get started?"
