As soon as Hansel was done talking Lillian, he put his phone in his pocket and slipped on his boots. He knew that he'd get in trouble with his older self and his sister for being out that late, especially on a full moon, but he wasn't going to leave that young woman stranded out there. He made sure to grab a knife and his favorite gun, holtering it before he left. He made his way down to the beach, looking around for the girl that was there. He at least hoped that the werewolves would stay in the forest. Lillian had listened to Hansel and had stayed where she was at. As she waited she looked around, taking in everything that she can see on the island. She had been to the beaach a few times in her life. So it wasn't something she was in awe of. Her floral sundress luttered around her and her hair got in her face as Hansel got closer. "Hi, are you Hansel?" Hansel moved over closer to her wearing his typical leather pants, though he wore only a cotton shirt because of the heat. "Yeah, that's me." He smiled. Though he was 14, he looked to be about 12. "Come on, we gotta get you inside." He offered a hand to her. Lillian could tell that he was young but a savior is a savior and she needed savin. She took in his leather pants and couldn't help but say something, "Are you not hot?" He chuckled. "I'm used to wearing these all the time. They're actually rather cool." He took her hand and started toward the Spire. She laughed at him and followed him off the beach, "So where are we going again?" She took in her surroundings so when she was on her own she would know where she was at. She didn't know how big this island was. "We're heading to the apartments. It's the safest place." He nodded. He had to think about how he would put it exactly for this stranger that was already confused. "My older brother and sister and my niece are there." She was so overwhelmed with all of the informtion he gave her. She had just appeared on the island and now there are apartments and other people here. She could not even think of what to ask him. How would she get an apartment, where would she stay now, how do you make money on this island. These were all of her questions and more. "I do not want to impose on you and your family" "It's not an imposition." He grinned. "And it's just until you find your own place. There's plenty of empty apartments. You just pick one and it's yours." "You don't have to pay?" She was so confused on this. Surely there had to be some way of making an income on this straight island. Hansel shook his head. "Nobody pays here. It's all honor system and bartering or some shit. As long as you pull your weight, you don't have to have any money. But if you sit around on your ass and do nothing, then you got problems." He shrugged. Her mouth dropped open just a bit at Hansel's language, "What do you mean pulling my weight? Manual labor?" She sounds really confused still. There was so much here that was different from where she came from. "She walks quicker to get next to him. "You said there were werewolves?" Her head was spinning with all of this new information. "Not necessarily manual labor, no. There's a girl that runs the cafe here. She cooks for everybody. And there's a pub. You could be a waitress at either place. Or, you know, if people need clothes altered and you're good at sewing, you could do that." He shrugged. "The werewolves don't change right away. They do when the moon is fully up and that's going to be a little while. We've got time to get inside." "I am not really a very good cook. My father always said I would make an awful house wife." She lets out a breath of relief when she hears that they did not have to rush. "Oh that is a relief. I have never been around a werewolve" "You don't have to cook. You just find something you're good at and do that. There's a farm and stuff too." He nodded. "My brother takes care of my niece. She was orphaned not too long ago so there's that. And my sister goes out hunting every now and then. Or, you know, you could be a receptionist at the hospital." He shrugged. "It sounds like there are a lot of options for me" She smiled, "Do you have a map of the island that I could use? This is all just so overwhelming I don't know where to begin" Hansel shook his head. "No, there's no map. I think there's a guy that might have one, but I don't know for sure. Everybody pretty much just wanders around. One thing's for sure though. Doesn't matter where you go on the island, you can always see that." He pointed up to the spire that could be seen above everything else. "So you can never really get lost." She looks up at the spire squinting a little in the sun, "What is that?" She looked over at him then jumps when she steps on a pebble, "Ow! What about shoes? I need shoes and clothes...do I trade for those too?" She hopped around a little as she asked this trying to reach down to her foot without flashing the world what was under her dress. Hansel sighed and stopped for a second. He found a tree stump to sit on and took off his boots, holding them out to her. "There are stores with clothes in them. But when you finally find your own place to sleep, all of your stuff just kind of appears." She took the shoes and put them on. They were way too big for her but it was much better thn barefoot. "Thank you" She smiled at him and smoothed her dress down. "Do you mean like magic? Everything will appear?" Her eyes are wide in wonder. He nodded. "Kind of. I just know that when I finally picked a room, all my clothes showed up. And my favorite gun." He patted the pistol holstered at his hip. She looked down at the pistol and smiled, that was familiar to her, "My father used a gun. He was in the Army 107th Infantry" She said this with pride, she was so proud of her father and would brag to anyone about him. "That's really cool." He nodded and kept her walking toward the apartments. "My dad took me and my sister out into the woods and left us there." She gasped when she heard this and looked at him shocked, "What?! That is horrible!! Was he sick? Oh that wretched. You are lucky to be alive!" She had never heard of someone being left by their parents before. "Doesn't matter why. My sister and I survived. That's all that matters." He shrugged. "Yes, that is all that matters. It sounds like you have a lot of experience with weapons" She would stick close to him and his family if one of the werewolves got close to her. He nodded. "I do. Knives, pistols, cross bows. I'm good with all of them. My sister and I even invented a few weapons." He grinned proudly. She grinned and laughed at herself when she stumbled, tripping over her own feet in the too big shoes, "Oh I am such a clutz, I am sorry." She blushed and steadied herself He helped keep her on her feet and smiled. "It's okay. Come on, we're almost to the city." He indicated the road that could be seen up ahead. She looked forward, 'Oh, civilization...how many people are here?" She looked back at him then thought it better to watch where she walked. He shrugged. "A lot. But there are plenty of places to live. I've only met a couple of people. But I know there are a bunch more." "And nobody has been able to get back?" She already missed her parents. Until then she hadn't thought about getting back. If there were a lot of people that meant that there probably wasn't a way. Hansel shrugged again. "Some of the people around here don't care whether they get home or not. It's better here than back where they came from. Now, the power's out because this guy tried to see if he could find a way to send people home that wanted to go. Fucked everything up. No power, even people with magic and shit are all just normal." "Well I could understand why some people would not want to go back but....my family....I will miss them" She sniffles and cries softly then. "Oh. I'm so sorry!" She wiped her tears quickly and took in a deep breath to get herself under control. He sighed and stopped walking, putting an arm around her shoulder. "It's alright. You're a girl." She couldn't help it, she laughed through her tears and leaned into his shoulder, "Yes, thank you Hansel, you are a gentleman" "Better not let my sister hear you say that or she'll laugh at me forever." He shook his head, leading her along with his arm around her shoulder. "Either that or she'll think you're crazy." She laughed and continued to wipe her cheeks and sniffled, "I promise not to tell her how nice you are being to me"She looked at him with a small teary smile. "Let's get you inside and get cleaned up." He nodded. She nodded and looked towards the apartments,, "I guess the sooner I get my apartment the better, right?" "Yeah. And you might want to ask around. See if there's anybody you know around here. There's a bunch of people that have had friends or family members show up." "Really? So my family could show up?" She looked so hopeful evven though a small part of her knew it would not be true for her. He nodded. "Absolutely. I mean....I got my sister here. And my brother. But they got here first." He shrugged. "Anybody could pop up." She smiled, "I really hope that you are right Hansel. I am so glad lucky that you heard my call!" He chuckled. "I'm glad you feel that way. Apartments are right over here." He headed up to one of the buildings, holding the door open for her. |
