It was time. Rose knew that she was taking many risks searching for the Doctor as she had been, but with the universes so close to collapsing and everything almost literally falling apart, she had to do something. At least, that was her excuse. She had her own selfish reasons for wanting to find him again, but saving the world seemed like a good enough reason. She'd been working with Torchwood, working with their time and space travel division, had gone back to school a bit, and all in all, she was doing alright. But her desire to go back to the world she came from consumed her. And when they discovered that planets were disappearing, they knew that something was wrong.
She'd found him. The hows and the whys weren't important once she'd found him. He'd seen her and she couldn't help her own wide smile. They started toward each other, and Rose knew that somehow everything was going to be okay. They hadn't expected the Dalek, though. There was a flash, the voice, and the Doctor was on the ground. Her smile disappeared immediately, and she rushed to his side. "Doctor?" She dropped to the ground beside him, reaching for his hand. "Doctor- don't- don't you bloody dare leave me, not after I came all this way-"
The world was literally collapsing around them, but the Doctor couldn't help but smile. He found that 'the end of the world' was taking a backseat to the much bigger news of Rose Tyler returning to his universe.
He'd ran to her- of course he had, of all the times to run, this was definitely one of them. He had, admittedly, been quite oblivious to any danger around him- the Doctor wasn't used to worrying a great deal about how dangerous things were, and he'd encountered the Dalek's plenty of times. But he really, really didn't want to regenerate yet. He wasn't ready to go. He saw the Dalek, he hit the ground- twice, it had hit him twice- and his last thought was just how cruel it was, to snatch life away from him before he reached her.
Everything went dark, and then-
He gasped for air, hearts pounding violently in his chest as he tried to sit up again. It was her voice. The sun- why was there sunshine? Why wasn't he in pain? Why wasn't he regenerating? Why wasn't he dead?
"Rose?" he gasped, reaching for her hand, feeling it warm and real in his own. "Rose!" he exclaimed, tugging on her hand to pull her down into a hug. "I'm not dead!" he added, although that much was obvious.
Rose hadn't been paying attention to their surroundings, her attention solely on the Doctor on the ground in front of her. She shifted the weapon she had been carrying to her back just moments before he tugged her down and she burst into tears as they embraced. "Oh, thank God, Doctor," she started, feeling a bit foolish as she brought a hand up to swipe at her tears. And then she realized that it was sunny, that it was beating down and her jacket was suddenly too heavy for her. Pulling back just slightly, she looked up, squinting in the sunlight. "Uh. Doctor? I don't think we're in England anymore."
"Ooh, hello!" he responded, giving her a dizzying smile. He propped himself up onto his elbows, and had a little look around.
"Nope, nope- not England-" he sniffed, as if he could figure out their location like a sniffer dog. He stuck his tongue out and licked that the air. Hmm. Salty. Sea air.
"Huh, must have been some sort of transmat, thought I was a goner, then!" he told her, still smiling, as if narrowly avoiding death with a very amusing fate.
"Don't even joke about that!" Rose cried, jabbing him in the shoulder before she hugged him again. She pulled back after a moment and then unzipped her jacket, pulling it off and laying it down before setting her weapon on top of it, so as not to get sand all into it. "But how- I don't understand."
Did it matter, though? They were both safe. He was here. Alive. "What is this place? I mean- I can see it's a beach of some sort."
He couldn't help but laugh, even though it was highly inappropriate. "Sorry, sorry!" he insisted, although he didn't look particularly sorry about it. He quirked an eyebrow a she started to take off her jacket, wondering what exactly she was doing.
She didn't understand- he didn't understand, either. "Brilliant, I don't understand either!" he grinned, sitting up properly and giving himself a pat down, as if to check he didn't have a gaping whole in his chest or something.
"I don't know! Shall we go and find out, Rose Tyler?" he asked, reaching for her hand again, just because he could. She was here. She was with him again! He couldn't stop smiling.
"Alright, alright," she said, picking up the gun and leaving it strapped at her back, holding onto the jacket with one hand. Rose took the hand he offered, giving it a light squeeze. "It doesn't seem familiar at all."
The beach seemed mostly empty and she pushed herself up to her feet. Rose couldn't help her own smile as he did, and she moved to give him another hug, unable to help herself.
He probably should have been worried about the fact that they had left the TARDIS behind, and the fact that the Earth had been stolen and taken over by bloody Daleks, and that everyone else he cared about had been left to fend for themselves- had the Daleks sent them somewhere else on purpose? Or had something else happened, had something gone wrong? He didn't have an answer, and he loved that.
"No, no- not Earth, anyway. Something of a replica- hmm," he waggled his head slightly, as if considering the notion and then quickly dismissing it. "Very quiet, eerily quiet, where are all the people?" he pondered aloud, as he took in their surroundings.
He turned to Rose, as if expected her to provide an answer- but every time he looked at her, all the excitement came bubbling back and he didn't care about the reasons anymore. "Oh, Rose Tyler! You came back to me," he told her, giddy with joy.
Keeping her hand in his, Rose simply watched him as he considered their surroundings and pondered what might come. Like him, she knew in the back of her mind that she should be more worried about what they had left behind, in both universes- in all of them, in all time- but she was just too excited about being here with him again. As he looked back to her, she couldn't help her laugh. "Of course I did, Doctor. I always come back to you. I promised you forever, remember?"
She hugged him again, properly, now that they were both upright. "Oh, I missed you so. You wouldn't believe how long it took for me to figure out how to find you, and then to actually make the jump- I was almost beginning to think I wouldn't make it."
"That's right, so you did!" he replied, as if it were really just that simple.
"Oh, I'd believe it. But then- you don't look that much older..." he told her, holding her at arms length and examining her a bit more closely. "No wrinkles or grey hairs. Just the Rose Tyler I remember," he smiled. Honestly, he wouldn't have minded a jot if she had been sixty, just to have the chance to see her again.
"But you did make it, of course you did, you brilliant, brilliant woman. I knew you were fantastic!" he grinned, pulling her in tight again.
"I'm not that much older. Three years or so?" Rose didn't have an exact number- time seemed to run just a little bit differently in Pete's universe. She closed her eyes as he pulled her close and she hugged him just as hard in return, not wanting to let go of him. "I did what I had to do, Doctor. And when we found out that all of the universes were being pulled together, I knew something was wrong. I thought you'd want as much help as you'd be able to get."
"I did, I did! But I think you wonderful people figured it all out before me, this time," he beamed, as if he was extremely proud of that fact. And he was- he'd picked the best, and now they were saving the universe without him.
But now what?
"Well, Rose Tyler, I'm afraid we're stuck here," he pointed out, although he really didn't sound too sorry about it. "No TARDIS to help us, nothing but beach and-" he was distracted, eyes narrowing as he gazed over her head into the distance. "And a city!" he exclaimed, spinning her around so she could see what he had spotted. Maybe someone could explain where they were.
"I imagine we're all just doing what needed to be done. What you'd do." Rose blushed faintly, pleased at his smile. She looked around as he pointed out that they were stuck here, laughing as he spun her. "We could see what the city is? Maybe try to find out where we are?"
She looked over into the distance, then stepped just to the Doctor's side, checking once more to be sure that she had her things before she took his hand. "Shall we?"
"That's because you're all brilliant!" he exclaimed, and he really did mean it.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, we shall! Let's go and find all the people! And somewhere to live! Oh, there's a thought! We need to find somewhere to live, like normal people," he grinned, giving her hand a little squeeze before moving off in the direction of the city. "
