B 4723. Mitchell’s life saviour. He relied on it. Every minute of the day. 9 lbs that gave a man the belief that his life was in his own hands. And god, you needed that belief. It was all you had left when hell was raining down at you. The never ending drums of bullets and grenades. Mitchell had ripped a canvas into two parts, wrapping it around the rifle to protect its muzzle and bolt. If mud would get in there, he was doomed. Then all you could do was hide and let others take over. And he felt very much like hiding. Everyone did. Fear was everywhere you looked. Tired faces that wished themselves as far away from this place as possible. Life was somewhere else. This was just hell. Support line, not fire line. Thank god. He didn’t want to be one of the poor bastards at the front. Here was bad enough. A small cave – a hole in the ground, supported by wooden beams. It was dark and cool. Almost freezing. It was December again. December 1915. His second Christmas spent in hell. But at least it wasn’t the narrow pathway that lay farther east that it was in now. Farther towards the Germans. First, the Germans had to break through the fire line. He wasn’t safe. No one was safe nowadays. But at least there were people between him and the Huns. Mitchell’s gloved fingers were wrapped around a small piece of wood. His knife danced from one side to the other, probing and testing until it found the right place to carve. Until the image of the outcome felt right. There was already a head – an animal head – and the rough structures of a body. It would soon become a dog. His mother loved dogs, especially her own. She had been rattled when it had died three months ago. Grief was visible in every word she had wrote. He wasn't so sure if Meimo was the only reason of her sadness and dispair or his absence as well. So now, this would be her Christmas present. It was one small thing he could do. If he would be able to send in in time, that was. |
