It had seemed like a good idea in the beginning. It had seemed like an awesome idea, actually. Sherlock didn't have a lot of experience with babies, and the best way of rectifying that would be to get some hands on experience. But then when the reality dawned on him, when he and John were left with the little bundle of fun whilst her parents went off to frolic like animals in the woods, it was not so much an awesome idea as it was completely and utterly terrifying.
For one thing - and keep in mind that Eve had been with them all of five minutes - she was impossible to read. Her expressions changed far too quickly for him to be able to follow any substantial train of thought and she laughed and frowned at nothing. That and she didn't speak. She just didn't speak. Her noises were indecipherable and she gave absolutely no indication as to what she was trying to communicate about.
Of the five minutes she had been with them, Sherlock had spent four of them staring at her, wondering what she was going to do and, if this was all there was to babies, why she needed to be watched anyway. She was obviously not going to get up and destroy things, she had no obvious depth perception and kept kicking herself in the face.
