Briseis had been up since early morning, as she usually was. It was something that was required for running a bakery, and she did not resent it. She loved seeing the sunrise, and the birth of the new day. Even when she had been in Achilles' camp, the rising sun had given her hope that maybe this day would be different, and full of possibilities that she could never imagine. But this morning, she had not been sad when the sun rose. She was happy here, truly. It was so much better than the place from which she had come, that she could do nothing but smile as she realized that she had been here long enough now that perhaps she would never have to return home, to the world that had brought her so much pain.
Here she had a respectful job, a nice place to live, friends of a sort, and a good friend in Imrahil, although she would not be broadcasting the details of that friendship. It pleased to her, and that was all that mattered.
She removed the rolls from the oven and placed them on the counter, smiling at how they had turned out. It was getting late enough that these would be the last that she would make today, although these were usually popular later in the day than the others since they were, basically, dinner rolls. She was whistling as she put them into bags, listening for the door bell to alert her that someone had come in.
