Since arriving on this peculiar island, and in the absence of Daisy to pursue, Gatsby had found himself with an almost insatiable curiosity. He wanted to understand this place and to unravel it's secrets. In many ways, the island was his new love- or his new obsession may have been more accurate. He wanted to know how it worked, and then he wanted to know how to be the sort of person that suited the island. He wanted to be successful and modern, he wanted to fit into this society as if it was all he'd ever known. He was trying to quickly adapt, but the truth was that his curiosity betrayed him again and again. Instead of remaining cool and aloof, and acting as if none of it was news to him, he was behaving like a child experiencing the world for the first time. He'd actually screamed when he'd reached for a set of doors that had swung open on their own with a loud whooshing sound. It was embarrassing, even if he had laughed it away.
But there were other things, magical things- television screens that looked as real as life, the communication devices- the tiniest telephones that you could just carry about in your pocket and receive instant telegrams on the screen. A screen you could touch and operate- he wanted to cry it was so incredible.
But today's discovery had really surprised him, and as soon as Nick had made an agreeable response to his request, he'd dashed back to the apartment with this new invention clutched in his head. He rushed in the door, headed over to where Nick was seated on the sofa and joined him, kneeling up on the cushions without even removing his shoes, and leaning in a little uncomfortably close in his enthusiasm.
"This is quite something, Nick. Trust me?" he asked with a smile, and a little nod that suggested he already knew the answer. He reached out, and carefully, gently inserted the little earphones into Nick's ears, and let the music play as he watched him expectantly.
