They had rose that morning with the sun, and headed out in almost mournful silence to set about digging a deep hole in the hard ground. It was too much to think that in a matter of hours, they would be laying Gavroche's cold body into the cold dirt, and it was going to stay there forever, while they went on living without him.
It was time. They had wrapped his body in a red sheet, each of them with a rosette pinned proudly in place. They were going to do this right, give him the decent send-off that he really deserved. They had to let everyone in this strange place know that this child was a hero, and they would not let him have died in vain.
The walk from the apartment back over to the graveyard took forever, but maybe that was a good thing. Courfeyrac held him as he had the day before, cradling his body protectively as they walked slowly, solemnly, letting everyone watch what was happening. Let them know who had done this, let them get righteously angry over such injustice. Too much was going on in Courfeyrac's head for him to fully understand the place they were now- he knew it was very, very strange, and that something was very wrong, but all of his attention was on Gavroche. The rest of it could wait.
