Warning: ---POTENTIAL SPOILERS---
Ben is perfectly capable of hard work - life on the farm did that for him, at least until money troubles drove him away and straight into a short-lived adventure into crime. Until the gun accidentally went off and killed that man. He was supposed to sit out twenty-five years for that - he only made it through two, because a certain letter drove him home. And then he got shangaied and everything had been set into motion, hadn't it? But either way, he's got something to do now - even if it's bound to make certain injuries worse. The inside of his glove's slick with his blood from before he'd remembered to put on gloves as not to irritate his wound, and that's annoying but it doesn't keep him from working. Applejack told him to make sure that the new sprouts were covered and that the rest was watered. And so that was what he'd done, walked every inch of that farm, did his job, found the oats and hay where she'd told him and loaded all that on the back of the pick-up truck. But it's really too early for him to go back to work. He's already been pushing himself to the limit with work that amounts to very little, at least compared to a roustie's work or breaking rocks from sun up to sun down. But in the end, it all sure beats being cooped up in that trailer. He takes his time walking back to the shed with pitchfork in his hand, carefully sets it against the wooden wall, wipes the sweat of his brow with a gloved hand and then peels them off, gingerly, carefully. There's a hiss when the leather drags over his wound, but then it just stings because it's exposed now. Well, he can't ever win. Ain't no reason to just give up, though. |
