It was clear that Kate was from a different point in time from Desmond and Charlie, but that really didn't worry Desmond too much. In all honestly, he was just glad that someone else familiar was there. And if they were all showing up a little bit out of sync, it gave him hope that the others might follow. So, it wasn't home- but with the way things had been going on their island, perhaps he ought to consider it a very lucky escape.
But it was strange, and there were still stresses, there was still confusion and unanswered questions and a certain ominous air about the place. But there were also hot showers, and real beds with proper linen, not to mention the array of entertainment on offer. He heard people complaining about boredom, and he had no sympathy. He'd been through hell the past few years- this island was like a paradise to him.
Still, he wanted to do something useful. Routine kept him sane, stopped him over-thinking everything, and it was something that he could contribute to this new society, gain people's trust. And okay, it was partly an excuse to get Kate out of her head and into the world, where they could talk about things properly.
After talking to her on the net, he'd headed out to gather some fishing gear. It was nothing extravagant - everything he knew he'd learned from helping Jin using the island's very limited supplies. He headed down to the beach to meet Kate. He could see his boat from there- he still hadn't ventured across. What was the point? Perhaps it was partly fear, however- how had it got there? What would he find on board? Would it be as he left it? It was a strange thought, but he would have to get over it. The boat would be useful to them.
