Who: Wanda and Marc
When: Friday night
Where: Food court
What: Marc is Not Steven. Surprise!

Steven had been reading again, although in bed this time rather than hunched over a desk, so Marc had suddenly been shoved to the front when Steven drifted off to sleep. The weird textbook about hieroglyphics and their grammar snapped into focus when he took Steven's glasses off, and then he'd waited a while to make sure Steven was properly asleep before slipping out of bed and changing back into clothes instead of pajamas. It was his time with the body, after all, and he wanted to check out the park and see this weird no-breathing part that the Doc had told him about. First, though, was his usual stop at the food court.

Steven was a vegan. Marc kinda... wasn't. He did his best to keep kosher, so he was avoiding things with ham and shrimp and stuff, and he got where Steven was coming from with being vegan, he really did, but if Bucky had left out sandwiches with chicken or beef in them, they were his. It was late, though, so he might just have to take whatever was there.

He found a chicken salad sandwich, and made himself some coffee - it wasn't just Steven that was tired, after all - and then picked a table to sit at.

Wanda had been restless. Every day brought her a little bit of further away from her past. None of her things had arrived with her. The clothes she was wearing had been created by her. There was nothing there to connect her to what had once been. Tommy and Billy. Vision. Pietro. They only ever visited her in her dreams. And those were becoming fewer. She had hoped that the Darkhold could help her find a way to get her family back. That she would finally have the key to understand her powers. This thing that rendered her different. That had given her the possibility to change reality and yet mostly brought her pain. Vision's death would forever be burned into her memory. And in a way being on this station was weirdly soothing. The empty halls visualised what she felt inside. She had only been a mother for a few days but it had left an imprint on her like nothing else.

Red swirls surrounded her hand as her feet carried her towards the cafe. She couldn't sleep so she would start to prepare for the next day. Her thoughts, however, were not with the baking. They were with the chance she had lost. She tried to recall the glimpses she had gained of the Darkhold. They weren't much. She remembered themes but not details. So once again, she had to learn on her own, had to see what of the seminars she could use. Only there was no one here who was quite like her. She held her powers back during them. Only wielded them to the extend that they were needed. She did not wish people to fear her. But she did not wish to hide either.

She wasn't alone when she entered the food court. Someone else had already taken a place and was eating a sandwich. "Steven?" she asked. The red swirls vanished as she stepped towards the man. "Are you up late or early?"

Marc didn't react at first, quickly reading through the network and the messages on Steven's (their?) phone. Steven's problem with the flickering lights was clearly caused by Khonshu being... well, Khonshu. Intimidating and scaring Steven wasn't going to make him magically stop interfering since he wasn't actually interfering in the first place, but the Moon god seemed to be of the opinion that a scared Steven was going to be a quiet Steven. Marc was going to need to get that sorted out. The Doc wanting to show Steven video footage of their chat from the other night, though. Shit. He might need to see if he could somehow wipe that footage.

And then he realized that the person who spoke was actually talking to him. He must be more tired than he thought, shit. He swallowed the mouthful of sandwich as the woman approached, and took a quick drink of coffee to clear his mouth and hopefully wake himself up a little. Did he know her? ...Yes. This was Wanda, Avenger and maker of libraries for Steven. "Wanda, hi. Up late," he answered with a nod, and then drank more coffee.

For a moment, Wanda was quiet. She watched him, her fingers dancing over each other. There was something wrong with the picture or the way Steven behaved. She wasn't quite sure. And then... she noticed the sandwich. "It is difficult to get used to this place..." She started, her gaze still scanning the scene. "I see you are eating meat again." There was a smile in her lips but it didn't quite reach the eye. Didn't quite stop the feeling that something more than a change in preference was happening. Steven did not seem like the man to just abandon his beliefs.

Huh? Oh. Shit. Marc smiled back; it also didn't quite reach his eyes, and it really didn't look like Steven smiling either. Steven's smiles were either hesitant little shy things, or wide and happy grins. Marc's smiles were neither of those.

"This place is all kinds of weird, yeah," he replied, since there was no point in even trying to pretend to be Steven any more. His British accent was shit anyway, so he just used his own Chicago accent. He said nothing about the chicken sandwich.

The smile dropped from Wanda's face. The patience she had once had been ground away by grief and loss. She had wronged people. Had held a whole town hostage. But she had walked till the end of the line and then went beyond it. She had come to think of the man in front of her as a friend. Or one who could become one.

"I think this is the point where you tell me what is so weird about you." Her accent was heavy. Her tone serious. Bad experiences made her cautious. Agatha who had pretended to be her friend only to attempt to steal her powers. Maybe Steven was like that. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Or maybe there was just something deeply wrong with him. Like it had been with the people in Westview. The empath let in the feelings around her, minds around her to discern what was happening as she waited for an answer.

What was weird about him? Fucking hell, what wasn't weird about him? They'd be there all night if he started making a list. He almost laughed, but figured that now would be a very bad time for that. This was an Avenger staring down at him, after all. He drank another mouthful of coffee, and set the mug down on the table before replying.

"What's weird is... that you're expecting me to be Steven. And I'm not." He pushed his hair back from his face, sat back and hoped his coffee wasn't going to wind up all over the floor.

The fact that Steven wasn't the only one who looked like Steven made her pause shortly. But he didn't look like Miguel either (eyes were red, fangs lacking) and the reaction wasn't what she expected. It lacked the confidence the other man carried. At least, the one without the beard. There was a red shine in her eyes as her powers reached out. The man was annoyed. Annoyed and worried. Steven... he was protective of Steven.

She tilted her head, analysing what she had felt. "You care about him, Not-Steven." The tone of her voice wasn't unpleasant but it lacked the warmth it usually held when she was talking to Steven.

He folded his arms over his chest and looked back at Wanda, unfazed by her eyes flashing red - he had his own eye-shine, after all. And her comment was simply the truth. "I do, yeah. I keep him safe."

He risked lifting his coffee again, and took another drink - it was at that great temperature where it wasn't scalding the inside of his mouth, and it wasn't just too cool, so he wasn't going to leave it be and let it get too cool. "And you give him bookshelves, which makes the apartment neater, and vegan food. So, thanks."

"Then who are you?" There is a warning in her tone. It was laced with tiredness. She craved peace. Yet, she found herself fighting at any corner. Vision had received no burial and her powers had manifested her grief into something horrific. Even when she had noticed what had happened, it was impossible to let go of the reality she had created. One that real life wasn't able to offer. "How are you using his body?"

Ah, shit. It was inevitable, really. Steven was making friends and there were so few people on the station that Steven's friends were bound to meet Marc and want to know what the fuck was going on. Like right now. Shit. And the Doc was going to work it out as well. And Khonshu would never give him any peace. Not that he did at the moment anyway, but that was beside the point.

Ducking his head, he pinched at the bridge of his nose for a moment, trying to fend off a headache he could feel beginning to build. "Y'know, it's my body too," Marc pointed out, as if it was obvious.

She ceased her spell. The violations she had commited in Westview, the pain she had caused was still haunting her. It happened on the quiet nights, when the loss she had experienced did not come after her. Instead, it started to sink in what she had done. That she had locked children in their rooms and kept their parents from seeing them. She had kept lovers apart and turned people into her puppets. Her powers seemed the key to everything. A temptation hard to resist. They made her strong. She had endured so much for them. Had been locked up because of them. And it was them who meant that she had to be the one to take her love from her. Yet, it wasn't right to fix every problem with them. Rid herself of every danger that threatened the few things she had left. She had to control her fear. Her urge to jump into actions she couldn't take back. He was protective of Steven and that meant something.

"How did you take control of it?" she asked slowly. She was still playing with her fingers, still unsure what to make of the situation.

Marc frowned up at Wanda, his headache really starting to kick in as she started asking questions. He could guess how this was going to end up, with the Doc being brought into this, and...

"How did I take control? What the hell? Do you think I'm possessing him or some bullshit like that? Is that it?" He started gathering up his stuff as he spoke, clearly agitated as he got to his feet. He wrapped the sandwich up and looked round for one of the trash robots. It had been a good sandwich, too, but he was starting to get wound up and his appetite had vanished, and he couldn't exactly bring it back to the apartment for later.

Wanda did not move. Instead, she continued to play with her fingers, continued to watch him as he grew agitated. "You have not provided any other explanation." Her tone was calm. Her thoughts were not. She kept watching him, waiting for him to explain what was going on. "You are not the only one who cares about Steven."

"I don't need to provide any explanation," he pointed out, "for something that's none of your fucking business."

There was a robot over there. He lifted the mug of coffee and walked over to it, setting the sandwich and the mug down on top of the robot before watching it scuttle off back to Bucky's place. One of his hands had found its way up to tangle through his hair, and then it tightened its grip. Just enough for that new sharper pain to keep him focused, keep him where he was, rather than the dull ache of the headache that was threatening to drag him down.

For a moment, she hesitated once again. The conversation was breaking off and she was nonethewiser. Fear drove her forwards, let her reach out with her magic once more. She had lost too much and was unwilling to let go so easily.

The man's frustration was obvious. He tried to hold himself together, tried to not let his anger take over. She understood that feeling. It didn't change things.

"I will not see him hurt," she said. A simple statement that hid the complex possibilities behind it.

"Ain't that fucking wonderful," he snapped, looking back to glare at Wanda, "when I already told you, I keep him safe! Everything I do is to protect him, and you know nothing about us so you can fuck off with your threats."

The anger in Marc was more than enough to cause Khonshu to swirl into being, simply to see what was going on. The god took one look at Marc before turning to see the woman he was talking to. He tilted his head to the side and there was a distinct impression of an eyebrow being raised, despite his head being a skull. The sheer power in the woman...

MARC, YOU PICK YOUR BATTLES WITH THE MOST INTERESTING OPPONENTS.

"I don't give a shit how 'interesting' she is. I'm outta here," Marc ground out, his headache now pounding in his skull and the need to be on his own making him feel like he was close to vibrating out of his own skin.

Assurances did not mean a lot to her. She had seen them broken again and again. Lies used to keep themselves safe or use others. It was true, she didn't know that much about Stephen and as much as she might have wanted to believe this man in Stephen's body, she couldn't. Her past made it impossible. Not without more than just words as proof.

But then the stranger started to talk to someone else and that someone else seemed to answer. She reached out once again. There was another mind present. It felt different. Could it be Stephen? The thought felt wrong.

SHE KNOWS I AM HERE, Khonshu said, AND SHE IS EXTREMELY POWERFUL.

"Wonderful, have fun, make friendship bracelets," Marc said as he shoved his hands in his pockets and started towards the exit. He paused as he got level with Wanda, and looked over at her. "Nobody owes you answers just because you want to know, do you get that? I don't give a shit how powerful you are, you have no right to demand anything like you did of us. Me." And then he started walking again.

Wanda watched the man leave. She didn't say anything, didn't know Stephen well enough to jump into action and man who walked away, did not care for a conversation so why have it? If this had been Vision, she wouldn't have been able to stand aside. She loved Vision. They had only really realised who they were to each other and who they wanted to be before Vision had been insured and taken to Wakanda. Every day that he was not at her side was hurtful.

She didn't return to the task she originally came here to do. She felt unsettled by what she had seen. It was more than just that. It was another reminder how little she knew about what had happened to them. They had been taken from another world and placed into this one. She couldn't go back to her home. Couldn't study the Darkhold to make sense of who she was.

Instead, she headed back to her apartment and pondered how to proceed.
