Arcturus Black ([info]arcturusfirst) wrote in [info]spinningcompass,
Arcturus didn't pass through this part of the station often. He didn't like the reminder that they were so close to open space. To death. There were layers of protective magic reinforcing the walls in some places, sigils stamped to mark them, and that was reassuring, but the windows? He kept away, or he did what he was doing now. Fly straight, eyes front, try not to look. He'd promised Sirius some new books to read, and this was the only direct route to the immense bookshop near the heart of the station. Arcturus flew everywhere, because there was no chance he would trust a muggle machine to convey him safely. Today, he travelled fast, because Siri wasn't seated in front of him, but safely indoors with Miss Katarin watching over him. The older girl didn't agree with Arcturus' attitude towards technology, but she understood his fears about muggles, and agreed to do things his way when minding Sirius, and that really was the best he could hope for here.

Arcturus wasn't too far from his destination when he spotted it. A thick, silky strand, almost like a rope, hanging down off towards the window. His eyes followed it down, only to see a figure hanging there. Was that someone in trouble? Taking a deep breath, Arcturus dipped the front of his broom, following the strand in a spiralling motion. There, upside down, was- 'O'Hara?!'

It would have seemed a voice from nowhere, until Arcturus remembered himself, and dispersed the concealment charms that clung to him and his broomsticks. Ever since he'd had violent threats made against him on the station, Arcturus had hidden all trace of himself as he travelled. No sight, no smell. He could have flown through the middle of muggle London unnoticed. Now, revealed, he sat comfortably atop the broomstick, wearing his usual winter robe, starched collar and tie visible at his neck, and an empty-looking satchel slung over one shoulder.

'O'Hara, are you alright?' the young wizard asked. He looked old, Arcturus thought, but that wasn't something to say. He stared at the upside-down man intently, only in part because he needed to focus on something other than the stars beyond them.
