She had been hiding since the night she arrived on the station. Every so often she had been able to sneak out and grab small pieces of food, but ever since people on the station had become aware that things had changed, it had been harder for her to find food. So she had hid away and she had waited. She had managed to find a hiding place in the food court, hiding away in a gap in the big thick metal walls that she had covered up with a big metal sign, directing people to another part of the food court. She felt safe there, secure. Like nothing could harm her. But it was lonely.
As much as she wanted to see her old friends again, she couldn't bring herself to face them. They would know she was different, just by how thin she looked. Her hair was shorter too, almost at her scalp. She was dirty and hungry and hardly in the best shape. But she could sense everyones fear on the station. Their anger. Their confusion. It forced her to stay out of sight. Forced her to stay quiet. She passed the time just listening to people. Finding them where she couldn't be seen in that space between reality.
Now the hunger was too much. She had to leave her hiding place in the food court and find something to eat. She crawled out from the gap in the thick metal wall and pulled the metal sign back over it to keep her hiding spot a secret. Carefully and slowly, she made her way through the food court, trying to stick to the darker places where there was less light. When she eventually found the place she was looking for, she went straight to the food stores, hoping to find something left behind in storage. There had to be something, surely! She pushed the door open and walked quickly inside, choosing speed over stealth. As she did, she accidentally walked into one of the shelving units. Empty containers clattered to the floor, making her jump in fright. Her heart raced frantically... had someone heard her? Was she safe? She waited patiently, listening out for the sound of foosteps.
