"Shards," Dan said softly, still looking out at them. "What's your purpose, Higgs?"
The mention of the trapped ghosts finally tore his gaze away from the Shards. He looked down at the sea as he thought back to when he had seen those ghosts, only a few hours before this all started. "I've seen them. Death shouldn't be like that."
He looked round at Higgs, frowning a little. He didn't like the mask all that much, but mainly, the notion of ghosts trapped in such a way really bothered him. Given what his purpose in life was, it wasn't hard to see why that was so. Dan existed to help people pass on peacefully. Ghosts that trapped themselves were one thing. This was something entirely different. "Are the Shards trapping the ghosts, trapping your son, to force you to do their work? How long have you been doing this?"
He took a step back from the other man, fighting the urge to pace. "There's no way back from death. You do know that, right? It's not the end, but there's no way back. If they reunite you with your son, they'll be killing you."
